I decided I had enough with a toxic job. I set a plan to make sure my 401k was set for the year, waited to finish a current campaign for my book (and made sure I had copies of all the work), checked my portfolio and resume overall to make sure they were up to date, checked my finances to make sure I had 6 months savings, then gave my notice. Then I took 2-3 weeks off to unwind, travel, sleep, exercise, see friends. Then I started contacting everyone to let them know I was free. Got lucky and found freelance pretty quickly. One thing you have to be ready for is to not work for a while and know you’re ok with that. Good luck.
I did the same, but I made a list of everyone I knew in advertising and started to let them know a month or two ahead that I would be available for freelance on a certain date. I hit up recruiters at places I had interviews that didn’t work out for whatever reason, I emailed old CDs. Basically anyone ever. Then when it came time, I just replied to those threads. I hit all my LinkedIn levers, did some instagram stories, etc.
Also, figure out your numbers. What’s your rate and how many days a month do you have to hit to break even for your expenses, taxes, savings and retirement. It’s not as much as you might think.
Also, make your last day at the beginning of the month so you get that last 30days of health care before you have to buy into cobra or whatever.
Do not do it until the new year! There’s a ton of reasons why, but the first one is health insurance and the second is that you’re just taking unpaid time off if you leave now. Get paid for it and then do it in the new year.
Def not. I’m like three months out from making a move.
I was kind of thrown into it after being laid off due to company loosing biggest client.
Immediately I started emailing old bosses and suppliers. Got hooked up with a recruiter/career coach who helped me update my resume. I landed a gig within a week and then my phone rang off the hook for weeks ahead. I was actually quite surprised how much support I got I from suppliers. They are very well connected and often know of which agencies are looking for help. Since I have a stellar relationship with some good ones they even recommend me for a bunch of gigs and introduced me to many CDs and HOP which got me in places a lot quicker than cold calling. Good luck.
Great. Though please, please, will people stop writing loosing when they mean losing ...
I’m especially curious to hear from those of you who aren’t in a major market and do a lot of remote work.
Started my company and jumped in feet first.
