There is a swing on the left where many aren’t acknowledging basic science and facts in rational ways. Sex and gender are highly correlated and we should respect trans rights and treat people with respect, while also being honest about the reality of biological differences. This shouldnt be controversial

I’d suggest taking a step back and imagining what it’s like to be a trans person in the US or UK, two areas very impacted by her comments and transphobia. Comments that deny the validity of people’s experiences contribute to much harder climates for those people to survive in. As a lesbian, I have witnessed the vitriol of the TERF community first hand, and seen it’s terrible impact on friends and community members.

I’ve always been a huge supporter of Rowling, as a gay person who grew up with Harry Potter. However it is difficult to see this article as anything other than excuses to justify herself: 1) In her fourth point, she uses isolated examples of people de-transitioning to reinforce her conviction on why trans rights should not be advanced. What about all the other trans folks who want to transition but have been held back due to lack of rights? 2) In her fifth point, she brings up her sexual abuse history. While I’m extremely sorry she went through that, to use that as a reason to not let trans folks use the bathroom they want to is ridiculous. Trans folks are no more likely to want to take advantage of bathrooms to sexually assault others. No man is going to transition just so he can use the female bathroom and peek on little girls. It is understandable that she would feel unsafe but that is an issue she needs to overcome and not a trans rights issue. I think she is bringing up her history to garner sympathy rather than reason. I’ve always been a fan of Rowling. I even approve of her retconning Harry Potter history with notes like dumbledore being gay, which does loads to advance LGBT acceptance. She is of course entitled to her own rights and opinions, but I think she is at the wrong side of this one. Hopefully she will learn more about this and see why she is getting backlash.

C2, sometimes being trans is not just a phase and is unrelated to social trends, but my honest belief is that sometimes it is. And note that I’m saying this as someone with relatively strong personal experience with trans people. I don’t think it’s as black and white as some people believe, and neither does JK Rowling. Here’s how I would explain it. You should never question a random person when they say they identify as one gender or another. It’s rude and unacceptable. However, if you’re a doc and you’re noticing certain social trends that don’t seem to make a ton of sense, you should have the right to question it scientifically and academically. And honestly, if someone is very close to you in your life, you get to question them too. Nobody gets a free pass on explaining major life decisions to their friends and family.

Whining about “cancelling” is pathetic. I’m under no obligation to like someone or give them money. Even if Rowing was a normal, everyday person, I’d consider her views distasteful, and indicative of a person I don’t want to associate with. But she (was) a BILLIONAIRE. With an audience of billions! She could be doing ANYTHING, and this is what she wants to do? Hell, it would take less effort to do NOTHING! She is actively leveraging being one of the richest, most influential authors in the WORLD to attack trans people. I have no sympathy, beyond the fact that she fell into the same trap so many rich people do, that they think because they were massively successful in ONE thing, makes them an expert in something else

D1 - agreed. It costs $0.00 to not speak out against trans people. I don’t think this is cancelling per se. I think a lot of people are just disappointed and turned off by her stance and how she’s been doubling down on it.

Thank god she is brave enough to try and keep talking. The cancel crowd are terrifying. It’s mob rule, it’s actual totalitarianism. Only through the messy path of actual discussion and debate can we iterate towards some common view of what to do - and we must remember that any such “common view” will be disliked by activists on both sides - one aide will claim it doesn’t go far enough and the other side will claim it goes too far. This is true for any policy decision.

MK1, you are vastly overstating things. People are not being Iocked out in the cold for their parents being racist. Literally all it takes is an apology and being quiet for a little bit, and you’re back where you are. Louis CK is still around. Rowling is still around. Another point- people have always been “canceled.” It’s just that in the past, it was your boss, your church leader who did it, without question. Now, everyone can decide on their own

I’m with JK on this one. I think her essay is very thoughtful and makes great points. It’s so classic that everyone totally freaked out and decided she’s some bigot, when in reality it’s the opposite.

It’s actually been a long time coming. Like, multiple years. For a loooong time I was like “guys, it’s just a random twitter follow. It’s just a random feminism quote. Calm down.” And it kept. On. Happening. Like, it’s actually quite easy to NOT keep retweeting TERF talking points. I do it all the time! After a certain point, it’s obvious that no, this isn’t an accident

Wow. I’m astounded that somebody expects people in the cancel culture to abandon their hypocrisy, research something. Membership in the cancel cartel by statute, requires that folks abandon and cancel all viewpoints besides their echo chamber. Love your optimism however.

Friendly reminder that Colin Kaepernick is still currently cancelled. There are more than100 quarterbacks including non-starters who he could be playing instead of, but who’s canceling who? By the way, the right has been cancelling people for some time, they may have actually started it. Remember the Dixie Chicks? No? Conservatives cancelled them before the word was even used this way

OP - Well no, we’re discussing one particular issue where I think liberals and centrists are doing a better job. There are multiple issues discussed in politics. I may not be pro-universal basic income. I may think Merkel’s response to the refugee crisis could have been more strategic. I may believe in the right to have privatized healthcare in a universal healthcare system. Here are some of my favorite sources If you want to do an in-depth analysis: BBC, Reuters, El Pais, O Globo, O Jornal de Noticias, Les Échos

It’s gone too far, even Fox News is canceling writers for having opinions in online forums.

A1 - look at the reply you're posting to, it's defending the right to use the N word and harass women. There is a difference between hate and speech.

I disagree with a LOT of her points but it is I think in the realm of reasonable discussion/debate, not something that should lead to ostracization. She has done a lot of good work with her philanthropy over the years, something most of her detractors can't say they've done.

like

OP - I know you described this as a “nuanced opinion” but have you actually talked to members of the trans community to understand why these comments are transphobic and ultimately lead to increased rates of suicide as well as violence towards the trans community? Listening to both sides of the argument seems to be the more nuanced approaches.

Have the same empathy and attempt to understand what tans people go through as you do for JK. I think that would be most helpful :)
