My advice would be to always be the squeaky wheel. If you accommodate they will take what they can get.
Told them they could either handle all my travel costs and keep my pay at what was offered, or they could increase my offer so I could afford to cover 50/50 - so they increased my offer and i now expense as much as they let me (flights, hotels, cars, meals) - I’m very upfront with exactly how much I’m gonna bill them each time I travel
I negotiated them like you negotiate anything else; speak with the appropriate parties tactfully but assertively. Work-related travel costs should not come out of your pocket.
