I recently started a new role at Block/Square a month ago from another company and I was very concerned that my job offer was going to be rescinded before my start date because of all the horribly done layoffs lately. I just had to take a leap of faith because as others have said, you can get laid off from any company.
I’m not worried about looking and getting laid off. I’m more worried about staying and getting laid off. Volume has slowed down with loans. Staying at a job is never guaranteed but it is much easier to find a job when you have a job. Plus you can negotiate better with a current job.
There are signs my company could be doing layoffs so I’m looking. Bad Earnings call is early warning sign. If company don’t meet targets following quarter, layoffs are very likely.
It’s not always true “last hired first fired”, especially in banking. If you’re more senior, you’re more likely to be laid off. It’s easier to lay off an MD and have their team merge with another team reporting to a different MD.
You can get laid off anywhere so it really doesn’t matter.
Also BNY loves February layoffs so if you were even slightly concerned with your current position you could start looking now.
There are no “safe jobs” so you just have to take your chances and hope for the best.
Isn’t it more like a week’s pay per year worked? Even with 4-5 years only amounts to 4-5 weeks payout
Yes. I am worried about being told I don’t measure up / passing probation, having a bad manager and being forced out because they don’t like me, anything that might cause me to lose the new job. At this rate, any instability causes me concern — I would only move for a challenge but if they don’t keep me then I’d be screwed.
Everybody is worried I guess. Except for those whose company has been performing well despite the pandemic and the economic status. I never thought of resigning. Maybe only if there is a clear showing that I will be about to get laid off from the job.
That is only one of the things we need to consider. Probably, most of us are worried. I agree with you that even in our current companies, we are not safe or our continued employment is not guaranteed.
