I waited years. I was in absolutely no rush to change. TBH, it’s a pain in the ass when you realize how many things you’ll have to change and they all require a different level of documentation to do so. I really only did it when we started trying for kids so we’d all have the same last name.
I did it right after I got married. The process itself took me less than a month but it probably took me a few months to think of all the places to change my last name

I did it shortly after we got married - maybe a month or so afterwards. You have to start the process with the social security administration to get it officially changed in the system for federal records so you have to do that before filing your tax returns.
I just did it though the mail. Mailed on 12/11, got my license back 12/26 then the new card on 12/28 if it’s helpful to have a recent timeline for reference
Still waiting to do it and married in late 2019. Was a bit lazy and then the pandemic hit. Also it’s a little pricey: new license, new passport, etc. I am planning to wait until I need to renew my passport

I live in PA where it is EXTREMELY difficult to change your name so I’m not planning on it at all. Just a warning that it varies state by state so your timeline may differ from others.

What makes PA difficult?
I’ve changed my name twice (both times for marriage) and now think it might be better to keep your original name on all your official documents and just use your new married name socially. Nobody will know that your legal name hasn’t changed.
Agree.. I honestly doesn’t think it’s worth it, it could be a culture difference.. do u ever see a man change their last name to woman?
If you’re about to head into busy season and set on doing this before you file taxes, you can look into HitchSwitch or one of their competitors. They pre fill out the forms, mail them to you and then you add in a SSN or two, sign then mail it in. Nothing you can’t do yourself but I got it off my registry and it’s saved me a few hours and a couple Google searches.
