Personally we each get a set amount of personal spending cash (ex: $1000 each). All direct deposits hit our main joint checking, we move our $1000 payments to our personal “fun” accounts, the amounts for our mortgage, savings, investments etc get moved to those accounts and bills are paid from the main checking. In total we have a lot of accounts, but I like seeing things separated that way. Also, budgeting the same amount of spending cash for each of us avoids any issues of who makes more in a certain year, and no one cares where you blew your personal cash for the month.

like

What are you trying to accomplish and what are you concerned about? Much easier to advise rather than people blindly telling you what they do! Why would a monthly transfer be questionable? The amount will be dependent on what you want to accomplish jointly (pay bills, fund entertainment like going out to dinner, fund savings for vacations)

We’re married now so it all goes into one pot. Before marriage we estimated our joint expenses (mortgage, groceries, pet care, etc.) and then split that amount based on our relative incomes. That’s how much we put into joint and everything else stayed in individual accounts for personal stuff (facials, clothes, etc.)

like

We have separate accounts. Instead we split expenses, you pay the internet bill, I pay electric, we split the mortgage….. we put some extra money into a joint investment account that we don’t pull from unless it’s something like needing a down payment on a home. Spending money is our own.

I have both a personal account and a shared joint account. My salary direct deposits go to my personal account and then I have a monthly transfer for "my half" into the joint account for: mortgage, cell phone bills, utilities, and car insurance. I only transfer what I know is going to be withdrawn for shared expenses. I also put alerts on my phone so that I can see that my partner is also doing the same.

like

We put it all together. Some in a checking and rest in savings.

We don’t have so called joined acct. My husband pays our mortgage(~$6200) I take care of all credit card bills ($3500~4000)

How do you ask for a raise? And I do mean quite literally what words do you say. I have a mid year review coming up and I want to ask. Just finished my first year, started at a very low salary (65k) for defense litigation associate and no raise yet. I am in a state where wages are lower than the big cities but I still think this is too low given partners make 250k-500k/year. Thanks.

Found a job that I think is the one. One of my mentors works at the company and is going to review my resume for me ahead of my applying. Just found the hiring manager on LinkedIn and was thinking about messaging him to introduce myself and express interest. Should I wait until I formally apply to do so would it be okay to do it before?

Good luck to those who are going into their first busy season! Yes, it’s daunting at first - we’ve all been there (albeit, not in a remote environment amidst a pandemic.) My best advice is to take one day at a time (marathon, not a sprint). Remember audit/tax/consulting is not life or death, and you WILL make it through. Have patience with yourself and your teams. Find a mentor! Don’t forget you can always find some moral support (read: self-deprecating humor) in your fellow fish!
