Pay and exit ops are important, but not the whole picture. I am genuinely better at my job as a result of my MBA and I really enjoyed the time and the friends I made. Happiness is at least as important as the financial ROI.
Sounds like you have a clear reason for getting an MBA so I'd say do it with that in mind. I also got my MBA for the doors that it could have (and did) open. I broke into consulting although that wasn't necessarily my intention. I graduated from a top undergrad school, but with a non-biz degree. Even though I was progressing in my marketing career, I didn't want my lack of a biz degree to ever be something to hold me back. And I knew that if I didn't get my MBA before 30ish, I probably wouldn't ever get it.
So why those two? Wharton would not work?
HBS/Stanford are way over represented in the VC/startup fundraising world. Also I would like to be the in life science space, so Boston/SF would be the best
Here is why I went and got my MBA:
1) I did Aerospace engineering in undergrad so I wanted to learn business content
2) Besides working at a start-up, the MBA will always add value to your resume (even if it's just a brand name. In the US, brand is everything. I don't like that, but it's the truth)
3) I wanted to pivot careers
4) the bonds of friendship you develop are unbelievable. Some of the smartest and my most trusted friends are from my cohort. The community wants everyone to succeed and they will help you succeed.
5) I've never met a person who went to business school say that it was a bad decision.
The degree will pay dividends in the long run. Don't think short term and think about current comp and comp 2 years down the line etc etc. Highly encourage you to go.
Thank you everyone for the responses, I’m now leaning more towards the MBA route
Even though I’m paid a lot, I don’t have much pedigree. Long term, I would love to be in a VC megafund and/or start my own business in a specific industry that is littered with Stanford/Harvard MBAs. No guarantee I would be accepted into Stanford/Harvard, but I test well, so would think I have a shot.
Just get your firm to pay
D1, the ROI will definitely be negative in the short term as I’m already very close to MBA consultant pay (above MBA pay at not so good firms)
If you’re a hustler, the H/S MBA could propel you into investing. It’s tough going though. Either way if you’re not in a hurry to become Partner, the two year break is well-worth it. W isn’t as prestigious anymore.
