Started a new job last week and have not received much training other than HR videos on company policies. Been begging for some guidance from my new boss and coming up empty. Now he says he wants me to come up with my own 30, 60, 90 day goals for how I see my career progression going and that then he can review with me to help me achieve them…this is weird, right? So I just accidentally found out that the senior associate in our office makes almost 3x the amount I do per month. For background, we have 4 attorneys, the senior associate has about 9 years more experience than I do (I have 6). This person should be paid more than me, I have no problem with that. Is it normal for there to be that big of a difference in pay? I just want to know if I’m getting screwed.

I started my own practice, it feels like 40-50% biz development/ admin work. 30% practicing law and 10% coffee breaks. Anyone else? Mind you it’s a corporate practice so ALOT of calls that sometimes turn into nothing.

Our firm is growing fast and we need to add another attorney to keep up with the work. Our compensation package is 20-30% higher than what others firms in our area are offering. However, I’m still finding it difficult to get qualified associate to even apply for the position. I think part of the problem may be because we are located in a mid-sized city rather than a major metro area. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to attract talent when you are a newer small firm in a mid-size market?

I see a lot of opportunities to do contract reviews or other corporate matters in states I’m not barred in. I don’t typically take those matters, but I’m curious what those rules are. I’ve definitely seen large firms handle out of state contracts and acquisitions all the time and I actually know other attorneys who do it too. I just haven’t gotten comfortable with that. Anyone have thoughts?

So far I have sent one "cold call" application via email, directly to the managing partner with a cover letter and resume attached. No response.

Anyone have any tips or advice on what to do when you’re representing a contractor who will receive membership interest in a startup company as compensation and the startup has expressed they do not have attorney to draft the company docs such as the membership transfer agreement and the amendment to the operating agreement? Funny how lawyers will spend thousands on seminars to improve trial skills. But this topic is not discussed in our profession. I have read books in sales. But am unable to find any for lawyers. Solo that has outgrown DIY document management/billing. Looking to make the leap to an integrated document management and billing software system. Clio is the front runner based on my research to date (I have not yet taken it for the free test drive). Anyone else have any recommendations? Any obvious shortcomings/downfalls with Clio?
