For those who actually do what your passionate about, what do you do and what about it brings you so much joy? I feel like even as musician, playing the same song every night gets old.[continued...]

I think less about the tactical day to day and more about outcomes. For example, I’m passionate about sustainability, so I’ve centered my career around sustainability. Even when I’m spending a day cranking slides and hating life, I know that my work is ultimately making a positive impact on the world, which makes it worth it

There’s some decent — and debated — research about how turning your passion into your job will destroy that passion

I think the best balancing act is finding a role adjacent to your passion. You love music? Be a music teacher. You love gaming? Go into marketing in the gaming industry

My path through life is: endure the job for $$$ in order to enable your passions. Means you can buy that sweet guitar or new ps5 or travel or whatever. Zero emotional energy tied up in the job. It’s called work for a reason

Caveat here: this response is assuming you’re turning your passion into your job and you need the money

If you DON’T need the money, have at it!

I like developing people and leading large complex teams. Few things make me happier than having the people under me succeed and consulting gives plenty of opportunities to work with great people.

I still hate making slides though.

Ha fair point A1. No it doesn’t help me get out of bed in the morning, the $$ does that. But we all have to do something for work and if I have to work, I like what I do.

Being a consultant means churning slides. Being a software engineer means writing code. I honestly don’t know what I’m passionate about. Maybe cooking? But I can’t realistically turn that into a career.

So whats the secret? How did you all find your “dream job”? Or at least one where you wake up to work excited / at least find it enjoyable?

Lots of things are interesting as a hobby but boring af as a job. When you dream about park ranger you imagine being out there a few hours a day whenever you feel like it. If it is a job, you’ll go to the same place 8 hours a day everyday. Think about that

Great question and solid responses above.

For me, I have no clue what to do. I’m 26 and have been in consulting, startups, VC, and even recruiting. I think I will be happy doing something relatively interesting, high impact, that I’m good at that, and that makes me money. I wasn’t a great consultant, not the best startup person because I really just didn’t care enough, would like to think I’m getting better at VC/recruiting, but it’s hard. I am trying to take risk early in my career so if they pay off, they’ll pay off big and I can have the flexibility to find something interesting (like continuing to invest, advise companies, possibly government work, nonprofit). From an intellectual standpoint; I think I would really enjoy a hedge fund without the burnout hours that come with it, but that’s not realistic. For now, I’m just trying my best

I always wanted to do programming because I was fascinated by computers. First time I used a computer I immediately wanted to know how can I do that.
So I just followed that all along.
P.S: I hate building slides

Hello everyone! I am a Judicial Law Clerk, which I have been for a little over two years now. However, I’m planning on moving into the AML/Compliance realm. I have a background in finance, having been a Finance Disbursing Officer in the Army for 6 years with one deployment in that role. Additionally, I am currently a JAG attorney and studying for my CAMS, hoping to take that exam in the next month or two. Any advice or referrals for anyone I can talk to learn more about the field? Thanks! :)

I know I shouldn’t feel this way, but I just do. How did you cope with such issue raising your children?

I moved to industry three months ago. I love the actual work I’m doing, but the individual I report to is an asshole. During the interview process this never came out but after speaking with additional team members this is not a new thing and this individual has a really bad reputation within the group/company. Massive turnover as well due to their style.

I’m not happy at the job because of this individual. Not really sure what to do.
