Ok guys come on…this is absurd. I did not enter the office of my very conservative southern firm between Dec 20-31 even pre Covid. Don’t go in next week. Jesus Christ.

Going in two days between now and mid-January. One day to give notice and one day to return my equipment.

0 days in the office, but 0 days off.

I won’t come in between Christmas and new years so I’ll be going in twice next week

Tuesday in the office. No days off. No days in the office the week after and will work as needed except the 26th.

Might try to set up an in-person meeting with a partner Tue-Thur. Business development

In office normally next week, anyway between 26-30

After clerking, my BF recently accepted an offer from and joined a V50 firm (been there a few weeks). Shortly before his start date, he heard back from a V5 firm (one he’s wanted to join for a while) and just got an even better offer. Practice groups at each firm are also different.

The office he joined for the V50 firm is in City A. The office for the V5 firm is in City B (where V50 firm also has an office).

How should he break the news to the V50 firm to minimize reputational risk, etc.?

So what happens to comp for associates that are more senior than the scale (ie grad year 2013 or earlier now)? I’m a 7th year and considering a lateral move, which would likely push my partnership eligibility by a couple years because I’ll need to create a track record at the new firm. If I go and I’m still an associate past my 8th year, would I remain at the comp level of an 8th year or how is that usually handled?

I know this happens a lot but I still get mildly annoyed when a senior tries to make revisions to your work that don’t actually make sense and the partner eventually just reverts to your original language/wording. I’m a senior myself and I remind myself constantly not to mark something up for the sake of marking something up.

Recent lateral junior associate in brand new practice where I'm the only associate. I'm probably going to bill 1,500 hours max this year due to being very slow and taking time off for a delayed honeymoon which I disclosed during my interview process. I have been told my work product is good, I don't turn anything down, I participate in non-billable work, I'm responsive and I always let people know I'm available to help. Do I need to be worried about getting fired for low hours?

I’m interested. How do you do collaborate on documents? For me it was always scribbles on a printed document handed to me to type in by a partner. I still get this. Also get photos of markups. I’m pretty sure colleagues at my firm are inflating their billable hours. Is this the norm? I suspect many of you will think this is obvious and/or that I’m naive but wtf? I find hitting 2200 is tough even with a good sized work load. Am I just expected to play the game? I don’t want to sound self-righteous but if most are lying just to make the requirement, then maybe the requirement should be lower.
