I need some words of wisdom from this esteemed bowl. I have been an associate for almost 2 years in civil litigation with my bread and butter being family and marital law. I have the drive and desire to operate a solo practice with an emphasis on family law as that is my most comfortable area. I've been loved by all my clients and believe I have the charisma to attract new ones. It's not a matter of if I'll go solo but when. Any advice and/or potential pitfalls of going solo so soon?

What’s the best way(s) you have found to market yourself/your firm?

Putting in notice today at a very small firm that the owner wished for me to take over one day. It’s time, and it’s complicated, but according to former associates he’s acted completely unreasonable in response to associates leaving. Wish me luck.

Venting… I had a PC reach out last week for services (commercial real estate) who proceeded to tell me that their project is going to make me the “gold standard” , so rich and etc. further they wanted me to send them a plan of everything needed for all the phases of development and an estimated cost. The call completely drained me and rubbed me the wrong way. Then they brought up my age and me being younger, saying it’s an opportunity of a life time. It felt extremely condescending.

I was offered a partnership at a small firm I used to work at before my current also small firm. We had come to terms and I expected to inform my current firm. To my surprise, my current firm made me a significant offer to stay. Not a partnership, but making more money and better benefits. I’m torn because the other firm is under the impression I’m coming in as a partner. But I can’t turn away from the significant offer I have from my current firm, where I enjoy working. Any advice/thoughts?

I’m an associate attorney at a mid-size family law practice. (5 attorneys, 3 support staff). I’ve been here for 3 years and just asked for a raise to $130k from $90k. My annual billable target is 1400. However, since I’ve been here I’ve barely broken 1000 despite working my ass off. I bill out at $375. They told me no more raises unless I start taking my own cases. Now they just hired a new associate and are paying him $170k and he takes his own cases. Am I being unreasonable asking for $130k?

Does anyone have an email template they like when making "cold call" introductions to other professionals/potential referral sources? I'm a transactional attorney who needs to build a referral network with CPAs, financial planners, etc., and invite them to come to me with questions or send their referrals on over! Young solo here w/ a question about fees: 1. A local solo criminal defense attorney has offered to pay me to go and make appearances before the Court on some of her cases to make announcements. (For example, “ready when reached”). I’m open to doing this and this attorney is asking what my fee would be? Does anyone have thoughts or opinions on what a reasonable fee would be to do something like this? Hourly? Flat Fee? 2. I want to ensure this is ethical. I don’t see an issue with this. Thoughts?

Does anybody have a resource available for pricing and billing? I am 2 years out of law school, working as a corporate attorney, and wanting to go solo. Ideally, I will take my corporate client with me, but am working to build work on the side during the transition. Also, do you have any recommendations for document preparation? I would like to draft wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents, but would like a resource that has boilerplate provisions to utilize as a reference.

What would you say are the main perks of being at a small firm vs big law? I know the pay can be a lot less.
