The extra money here even relative to NYC rent makes it worth it for me. I will be able to pay off my mortgage in my home country on the next couple years. I also have world class treatment for my medical condition. I do like my job though! Are you thinking of green card sponsorship?

like

Thinking about GC but my company requires you to be with them for a couple years before they sponsor it. I think my financial situation would also be much better in my home country 😅 more leverage to negotiate especially with the NYC work experience. I really came here to experience the lifestyle in NYC, my home country has a much better social system too.

like

Ask whoever you work for to sponsor your GC - that way you can also have a fulfilling work life when you have it and can move.

like

So you love NYC but not the job? That’s a tough one to answer; it depends on whether you value having the perfect career more than enjoying your youth in a world class city. I know what my answer would be (career) but that may not be the case for you. As a fellow immigrant, I didn’t purposefully find a way to NYC. My best job offer just happened to be here.

like

We moved to NYC for money. Before we moved here, we had a perfectly amazing life in the west coast. We always thought we'd live in the west and not move again. But here we are.. 2 years and 2 months later, we're thinking of settling down in NYC. NYC means a lot of things to a lot of people. We're not crazy about the city although we do enjoy occasional things: traveling int'l, nightlife, some food scene, live events, etc. However for long term career progression and for raising kids, NYC still offers some of the best options. So we might stick around afterall. Also, an immigrant and currently a US citizen.

Omg OP, I am every lines you wrote. Only difference: I have this man I love here (and who loves me too). Otherwise I think I would have returned back home. I am not happy with the job and also can’t leave because of my L1 visa. I am not saving significantly more than back home (because of medical expenses and 401k which would not be on my budget where I am from). I also miss having close friends as I could not build meaningful friendships here yet. It is a difficult balance to find. Let us know what you end up deciding.

Life of non-immigrants depend on the Visa they hold and it’s so sad these companies don’t have a team where we can speak to someone immediately in case of a visa emergency situation . In EY you need to submit a form and wait for days together to get a reply from a human. Mean time you would have gone through 5 anxiety attacks.

The belief that you should be able to move from HCOL to LCOL and not have to take a pay cut is ultimate in socioeconomic and geographic privilege and outright entitlement. Nobody is going to give LCOL a raise to move to HCOL. The work you do is the same, you produce the same value, bill the same rate as peers in another geography. Take a pay cut or give LCOL a significant raise.
