To be honest this was one of the reasons we are planning a first look - we don’t want to miss a cocktail hour or time with friends. We’re doing tons of family photos before and just a smaller subset after. We will still miss a bit of cocktail hour as we get to go sit/sign license/eat a bit.
You could always get your family photos done pre-ceremony if that will help.
But yeah your guests probably aren’t going to be waiting around, they get cocktail hour started.
Are you set on not having first look?
Ya don’t think you can have it both ways… potentially you could shoot some photos with groomsman and bridesmaid and some family before the ceremony but separately from groom. We did a first look at the ceremony, designated 30 minutes for family photos, and then spent the last 30 minutes enjoying cocktail hour just the two of us. We had the rest of the evening to be with everyone.
Do a longer cocktail hour! Add appetizer stations and have heavy passed apps so people don’t get too drunk and have some benches and lounge furniture around. We did a first look and still spent nearly an hour on family and bridal party photos (and neither were large groups). Had an hour and a half cocktail hour so got to go to the last half hour
