^the PBCs are so bad. So are the TBs. dealing with high school degrees "accountants" using Quickbooks is a nightmare.

I've been at all levels:
Big 4 definitely has better clients and perks. Also a more friendly and open atmosphere. People at local and regional firms are less accepting of new people, and the offices are less social. The pay was nowhere near as good either. And small firms' clients put out straight up feces for their PBCs. 2nd tier national firm was kind of a good mix for atmosphere, but the hours were still bad, pay not as good, and clients worse than big 4.

In terms of tax, If you love 1040s for upper middle class and wealthy-but-not-rich individuals, a smaller firm is definitely the way to go. It's a very rewarding path, if that's what you're looking for. You'll do a lot of pass-throughs and handle everything from clients' business returns to their personal returns.

Big 4:
Pros: client PBCs, Big 4 benefits, salary, bonuses, not a huge focus on budget, food paid for by client, snacks paid for by client, resume, experience...

Cons: every one looks out for themselves, potential to be on a full year busy season, higher stress...

Regional:
Pros: not as stressful, staff more friendly, less stressful...

Cons: all the pros on Big 4 above

I get paid better at a national firm then I did at a Big 4 by a WIDE margin. However, I have heard this evens out as you progress in your career. Client wise it just depends on what you want. Clients are definitely different, but depending on what you want that is either good or bad.

Hi! I started an ivy master’s comp sci program this Fall but am curious how much experience would be expected for more junior SWE roles. Math major undergrad with 5 YOE in B4 consulting (familiar with alteryx, tableau, google suite, etc.) and basic python thus far (with second half of this semester focusing on java).

Any recommendations on when is appropriate to apply and for what level (intern, entry level, etc.) given the above background and experience? TIA!

How are people so sure about which accounting advisory practice is largest, etc? People are very definitive on here, but I can’t find any published stats to compare.

It appears DT practice is newest, but how would one get a feel for where they are in the marketplace? Talking with people in our DT ARA, they seem unaware that they would be smallest advisory group in B4, which seems very apparent when reading posts on fishbowl.
