For those who have had an unhealthy relationship with food, how did you teach yourself to eat in a healthy way?

10 years, 2 hospital stays, 2 interventions, 5 separate diagnoses, 2 IOP programs, 7 therapists (CBT-focused), 2 psychiatrists, 1 nutritionist, 1 sleep specialist, a leave of absence from work, a lot of yoga, a lot of journaling, meditation, antidepressants, anti anxiety meds, sleeping meds, a weaning program for said meds, a critical eye to what media I allow in my life, radical transparency, and - in the end - a relentless commitment to keep trying.

I have been considered “recovered” for 8 years, which I’m grateful for every day. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and is a life-long process. I will always be in remission from my eating disorder. It took me years to acquire the tools I need to cultivate & maintain a healthy relationship with food.

If you are struggling with an eating disorder or disordered eating, seek professional help. You don’t have to do it alone.

Because everyone is different, background, I thought I was fat, and some days, I would binge eat. For the record, i was never over weight, but my friends were just rail skinny. On those days, I'd tell myself I was disgusting and worthless and just end up eating more because eff it already ruined the day. The next day I'd hardcore fast and try and starve myself, only to fail, and end up binging, again.

I started telling myself it was okay to have bad days. That sometimes, I'm going to overeat, but you don't have to tailspin. I started keeping a food diary, so I knew how much I was actually eating. Everyday. Not just on good days or bad days. I stopped trying to drastically change my lifestyle, and took it one step at a time. Started as easy as eating whatever I want, but in moderation. To building one healthy meal a day, and eating what I wanted the other two. It was a process that I didn't even mean to fall into but am so glad I did. I'm no longer embarrassed for being me.

Idk what type of unhealthy relationship you're dealing with, maybe you have an undereating problem, but all I can say is baby steps can go a long way. I feel so much better about myself these days than I did back then.

Just got diagnosed with binge eating disorder - food has always been my only coping mechanism so I’m very interested to hear some responses

Yo yo dieter here. I make small weekly goals, one week at a time. I focus on incorporating a good source of protein since that keeps me satiated and cravings under control, that’s my #1 goal. I eat fish, tofu, ground turkey, beef, chicken, beans, avocado. I have vegetables every day, baked, fresh or microwaved/steamed. I bought a food scale so when I eat pasta or rice, I have portion control. I log my meals in a diary. I consult with Skinny Taste blog for meal ideas and plans.

If you can’t avoid eating the food, just don’t buy it. If you don’t have it at home, it will create a barrier and not having quick access should help.

Get good sleep and reduce stress. Lack of sleep and stress induces desire for carbs and sugar.

Cut down on alcohol - being drunk/ hungover means you are going to likely eat like crap.

Atomic habits - it’s a good book that you can listen to and try to incorporate some of the tactics in your daily life

13 years later, still trying to figure it out.

OP - I have a huge issue with food. I love food and find it to be almost the only source of happiness , joy and comfort. It’s sad but lately I push myself to eat salads all week but allow myself to go my usual crazy self on weekends. I also noticed if I workout on a certain day, I am wary of losing the benefit for next 2 day’s and mostly will behave. So now trying to workout on mondays wednesdays and fridays to keep the health effect going. Meal planning goes a long way if u can implement it. I mostly get stressed and hungry and end up making last min bad decisions

I strongly think that if I am able to plan and follow thru my meals I d be so much healthier.

Almost all the postings require actual certification or build experience. I am thinking that I may have to go back to school. My options are either go for masters or go for another bachelors in IT/computer science. What could be my other options? Thank you.

Any tips for staying injury free in middle age? My body seems to be falling apart. This is all after a 6 month recovery from Achilles tendinitis that the PT said was a result of running and hiking. I’m pretty active and in decent shape, but clearly I’m doing something very wrong.
