For those who have previously left a position in public accounting without another position lined up, how did yoy find that affected your future job opportunities? Was it positive, neutral or negative?

All depends on how your spin it. My leaving situation was super negative, but I spinned it as- I left this position, so I could focus on finding my next steps in my career without any outside pressure from my current employers.

Left without something lined up. Yes it was stressful due to uncertainty involved but found a new job in 2 months. Also know a friend who quit another Big4 and took 6 months to evaluate what she wanted to do next. If you want to do the same thing, its definitely easier to find the next job. However, if you want to completely change course and switch careers, then it may take a few months to learn whats needed to enter that field. Either ways , stress is part of the package, treat each interview as practice, dont get too attached to a company when interviewing. The interviews I thought I did well were the ones I didn’t get offer from and the ones I didn’t think much of gave me offers. So, you never know. Also, depends on the phase of life you are in, if you and interviewer have same views, honestly, skills come secondary but getting along has become primary factor in getting jobs for both me and my friend. At the end of the day, the work we do is not rocket science and can be learned pretty quick so I wouldnt fret about being 100% technically apt but as long as you are familiar with skills needed with job requirement - you should be good.

Agree on don’t get too attached to the job interviewed.

Friday is my last day and I don't have anything lined up. I don't consider it to be an issue because I am not planning to go back to PA, and I have the built in "I relocated to a new city" reason for any extended gap in employment record. Looking forward to the next adventure once everything settles.

Almost impossible to know if it was positive, neutral, or negative cause you don’t know how life would’ve played out on an alternate path. I’ll say that if you have the means to support yourself for an extended period and understand the financial implications of giving up salary and all that then go for it. Life is too short not to take some risk and enjoy the moment

So technically I was fired, but I’d still call that “leaving without having something lined up.” Still ended up making more money than I was earning in public, probably could’ve gotten more if I took everyone’s advice and started job searching on my PIP, but w/e. I had one recruiter tell me I’d basically be starting at zero because I didn’t have a reference anymore, “so prepare yourself for a $50k salary.” 1) he was a moron. 2) I had references from supervisors I worked with, just not all of them. Point is, ask around and don’t take bad advice just because some guy on LinkedIn is trying to get commission on an entry level job. It was stressful, but it’s also how you spin things. For me, “public accounting wasn’t the right fit,” and “I’m looking for a good team and company I can grow with as I further my career” were both common phrases. The good thing is even if you leave without something lined up, accounting is in demand enough that you should be fine. It took me 2 months because I have bills to pay, but I kinda wish I had taken a little longer as a mental health break (4 months would have been perfect, any longer and I would have enjoyed it too much). I did have my first interview (never heard back from them) about a week after my last day in public, and I got my offer for my current job after exactly 2 months of being unemployed. The 2 offers I got were from companies who’s internal recruiters reached out to me on LinkedIn. I had good luck setting up interviews with 3rd party recruiters, but most of them were too far removed to have as good advice as the internal ones were able to provide. I’d recommend finding companies you like, and using LinkedIn to find their internal recruiters for your region. Even if you can’t find region specific recruiters, you should still be able to find some, and just start messaging them to get pointed in the right direction (i.e. if you live in New York but can only find a California recruiter, they should be able to either help you or give you the contact info for the New York person). Good luck! Unless the economy crashes, and as long as you have money in savings, I’d 100% recommend taking a break if you need one.

TL;DR it was stressful but I’d call it positive. Do what you need to do and don’t worry about resume gaps.
