I had graduated during the financial crisis and saw my analyst class get laid off over the course of a year; eventually I did too. I just made peace with the fact that a lot of it was out of my control, but the one thing I could control was my reputation and willingness to work hard and learn as much as I could. And it paid off — finding another job during that time was difficult, but my manager and teammates were willing to be references for me (both formal and informal) for my next job and for other jobs after that. So while it was difficult, realize that markets cycle up and down, that this too will pass, and that if you do a good job, people will be happy to help you — layoffs are generally out of most people’s control.
It took me about half a year to find my next job, which now doesn’t seem that long, but at the time felt like an eternity. The encouraging thing is, everyone I knew eventually found new jobs that they were happy with, some have stuck with that second job for 10+ years. I think that employers were also pretty understanding about the situation, since a large number of people were in similar situations.
In terms of my long-term plans, my career path didn’t turn out the way I expected when I was 22, but I also don’t regret any of it — I’ve stayed in finance the entire time, but got to try a bunch of different things along the way, met a lot of people and built my professional network, and eventually went back to bschool to get my MBA.
