I got in through the military recruiting program at Accenture.
They bring you in as a senior analyst which kind of sucked. But I got promoted pretty quickly, as did a lot of my JMO peers that didn’t jump ship to a client or another firm.
I taught myself to code when I got out while I was in the FBI special agent selection. Got a job while in the program at a fortune 50 company making the salary of a 15 year agent and decided to go tech instead of government work. Went to get my MBA to get into consulting and got recruited after my first year and dropped out of my MBA as well.
Depends on the type of consulting you want to go into. For strategy, you need to case extremely well to get an undergrad position (we call them associates, others call them analysts) at my firm or go to a top MBA program for a Consultant (Associate at other firms). Finance or economics backgrounds help a lot undergrad to come in, otherwise with an MBA your undergrad doesn’t matter all that much.
Top MBA
Not really in greater EY, but Parthenon (EY’s strategy consulting arm) does. If you Google “Parthenon target schools” it’ll give a specific list
Recruitment fair at Student Veterans of America career fair.
I ended up at a top undergrad but the veteran card didn’t seem to do much with on campus recruiting.
All the above to get hired at Deloitte. I was an Intel officer, so I leveraged my clearance and agency experience. I also got security+ and PMP because I wanted to get into cyber. Networking wise, I went to CORE offered by Deloitte and luckily my mentor from ACP was a PPMD at Deloitte so that really helped.
Since then I’ve used my Deloitte experiences to jump to a tech startup.
I was an Air Force officer who did 4 yrs then MBA —> BCG.
Happy to help if you’d like to DM, particularly if you are considering MBA.
Hi there! I am currently in Microsoft and hold masters in computer science. I also work as reservist in US Army. Throughout my 6 years of professional career I worked as an engineer for startups to fortune 50 companies. At this stage of my career I am looking to move as a consultant in BCG. Do you have some time to chat about it? Please let me know. Thank you for your time in advance.
I used a junior officer head hunter called Cameron-Brooks to land a senior consultant job at Protiviti. For reference I was communications officer and transitioned to the tech strategy and operations solution at Protiviti. Cameron-Brooks hires into the big 4 although many of the roles are internal which is why I went with Protiviti instead. I have heard generally good things about Accenture’s junior officer program as well though.
Was enlisted, got my bachelors right after I got out, then MBA immediately afterwards from USC and landed a spot at Deloitte as an experienced hire (not campus recruiting). My USC network is what helped the most. I don’t think I would of gotten in without the network, to be honest.
Enlisted (6 years). Online bachelor's (Excelsior) completed a few months after separating. T20 MBA (part-time) completed within three years of separating.
No, recruited into S& from MBA.
Honestly, the hardest part was balancing everything trying to get the online BS. I was a submariner and parent. Had to do Calc 2 without a teacher or internet.
State school with mediocre GPA, ROTC, active duty infantry, lots of networking on LinkedIn and cold calls, got an interview, came in as an associate, 4 years later im a manager 🤷♂️
Purely luck but proving my worth has kept me in the game and has raised my base 100k in three years. So, take the job that gets your foot in the door and bust your butt.
