It’s counterproductive and had set the wrong expectation with my team on what the focus should be. Does anyone else work under a “mentor” whose perfectionism doesn’t allow you to develop your own practice style and strengths? I came from a smaller firm where I was very much encouraged to come into my own and I feel that that is strongly discouraged at my new firm. Instead of exploring style, I very much am coached that something must be done a certain way and something about my work is always wrong. Anyone else?

1st year corporate associate. I’ve only billed 500-600 hrs since September and have a couple of months I billed 20-30 hrs. We don’t really have an assignment system. Should I be worried? I just assumed it will be a lot busier in summer/fall and thought I should enjoy the slow time while I can. How to explain being slowly but surely being shown the door as a first year attorney in interviews for future positions?

Any advice on if your specifically assigned practice area stalls due to factors you can’t control (e.g. rising interest rates causing borrowing to stop and your a loan documentation attorney)? Most other practice areas are full or don’t have additional work to dish out at the moment so I’m not sure what to do. I’m worried about not meeting billable requirements but don’t see much I can do.

Am I making enough profit for my firm?

I became a 2 year lawyer in September. I started working at my firm, a mid-sized firm practicing commercial business litigation and PI, in March of 2020. Last year I made the firm $180k from my billable hours and I was paid $85k + full health and other benefits.

This year, I'm on track to make about $150k and to make the firm about $450k from my billable hours and PI cases that I originated and settled.

Trying to do right for my firm. I'm treated well.

I recently tested positive for covid and thankfully recovered. I just had another test and waiting for the results. My partner has been asking me when I can go back into the office. The truth is I’m hesitant to going back in because I likely caught the virus there and I have parents at home. But I feel some pressure to go back in. Any advice?

Advice for staying focused while WFH with kids? I’m a new dad to twins and I find myself working late to make up for being distracted by them during the day. I WFH exclusively. My wife is a SAHM and my MIL is here during the day too, but I need to find a better system to avoid getting sucked in to childcare during work hours. Tips?

Getting really frustrated with my job. Im by far the busiest associate my year level, and there are 2 people in my group who literally have no work at all. I feel like I keep missing targets and the partners are disappointed in me, but it’s hard to motivate when I see others not doing anything. I know I should be grateful bc the partners think I’m better than the others (and job security) but I can’t seem to convince myself to care.
