For those working in Intel, do you ever regret getting a clearance and not being able to WFH? I recently got cleared and feel the environment is making me unhappy but the security and money is decent. Not sure if I am pigeon holing myself to just intel work for the rest of my career...

IC* - Intel can be mistaken for a role/area of expertise. You’re overthinking it. You don’t have to use your clearance if you don’t want to. If you are unhappy in the IC just switch. You have two years to come back if you change your mind. The pay is greater if you are outside of consulting especially for STEM. We get paid a nice chunk of change outside. I got cleared right out of college and worked for IC companies prior. Prefer working for them hands down over consulting. Greater appreciation for those of us in STEM. Also please stop with the pigeon hole thing. Your mindset will limit you before anyone or anything. That’s not a healthy mindset to succeed anywhere.

I spent about a decade of my career in federal doing cleared IT. Since then I've had stints in tech doing product management, commercial consulting, and now doing data analytics in a F500. Pigeon holing is not a hard and fast rule about the fed space. ETA: I left the federal space about 5 years ago, so my experience isn't too out of date. I got my MBA years before I left federal, so my pivot out of federal wasn't related to the MBA.

I’ve honestly worked my entire life in the IC (7 YOE) Tried unclassified government work for almost a year and I hated every part of it. Find a company with a good IC presence, and you’ll enjoy it. You’ll also eventually make “IC friends” and you’ll always have someone to talk to wherever you go. For a while I was always the youngest one, but that eventually evens out. For me, I enjoy the work more and I enjoy the security of always having a job .

Clearance is a trap. At least at Deloitte you are pigeonholed into intel if you have a TS because it’s so hard to find people with one. They make it so hard to transfer out that you might as well switch firms. The sooner you leave IC consulting the better if you don’t see it as a long term career.

At many companies (not just McK), your pigeonholed because you’re part of a select few who have a clearance

I’ve been in intel for years and have refused to get cleared for that reason. Not really sure why they’ve kept me on this account for so long lol

Nope. Pretty easy to do at lower levels w specialized tech skills. I am going to have to switch out after one more promotion if I don’t want to automatically get passed over for promotions from lack of client interaction though.

I regret going cleared for many reasons. In the end you sacrifice quality of life and civil liberties and you don't really make any more money.

No regrets. Enjoy the work, money is solid, and my work stops when I leave the client site. A perk to not being able to work from home is that work doesn't follow you into the evenings and weekends.

Work can only start after leaving client site, so long nights and weekends on my end

Very agency/contract/subject matter dependent. I've been at some that allow work from home. Others only from a SCIF.

Work staying at work is a huge plus in this remote environment. I kept a clearance as a safety net/backup job pivot. 90% of the time I don’t use it. Upskill and update bio. Network within your firm or look elsewhere. Make sure you’re getting outside enough. Walk places, get in nature.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I think I am having trouble adjusting to the work environment coming from working in a corporate office surrounded by my fellow peers and team. I’m an associate just trying to figure out my career so feeling a bit overwhelmed. My current project/company won’t let me switch to a more data analytic/cloud solutions role so looking for exits potentially in IC or other federal work without clearance. Appreciate all the perspectives.

I don’t regret getting a clearance and I get to work from home too (during Covid at least) If you do it right, more than enough opportunities in commercial/private sector where clearances are highly desirable and compensated.

As times change so do organizations policies, wfh will definitely be an option even for cleared folks in the next 5 - 10 years.
