You’ll be fine. I live there and it’s much better than midtown or lower Manhattan at this point. Closer access to riverside and park also gives you some outdoor space to run and/or go for a walk without bumping into people. what block and street are you moving to?
Just DMed you

I’m 26F and was worried about this too, having never lived in NY and moving during the pandemic. It’s actually felt more than safe, and I have a lower threshold (was stalked and robbed in one of my previous apartments).
I will say that I don’t walk around a ton late at night on principle (will take Uber or whatever instead), but W70s/80s are generally good. Personally, there are a few streets that I would avoid - not because they’re unsafe per se but because they just “feel” sketchier to me when it’s darker out or have a lot more people hanging near. I liked the 70s closer to the park (vs past Columbus near the square or past it) and the 80s no farther west than Amsterdam as places to live. But these areas are also generally a bit more $.
DM me if you want details; happy to share stuff about my own search for a 1-bedroom in the area since I looked at maybe 20 places and walked every block 😅 I will say that you can get high rises in 70s but not in the 80s; 80s conversely have more brownstones which are harder to find in the 70s. The value may be different too depending on the neighborhood, depending on what you’re looking for in a short term (and eventually long term) place.
I would also advocate for getting a sublet before you get a longer term spot because each block feels different.

You’ll be fine. The homeless rarely ever do anything other than ask for money.
Totally fine. Sure, crime etc in NyC is “up”, but it’s still less than even 2015.
The homeless shelters were really only bad during the peak lockdown months when they couldn't get enough money/places to go. Definitely has improved now, but a few streets aren't so great after dark. Of course this is coming from someone who's only lived in NYC and DC...
If you have the budget. 170 Amsterdam (on 68th St) is a great building and location. We just left NY for Seattle.
Maybe a bit biased since I’m a M. But in general the upper west side is residential and safe and the people experiencing homelessness in NYC don’t have a historical association with causing crime. I wouldn’t worry too much there.
But if you’re concerned, generally I’d say staying center between riverside park and Central Park is the safest bet.
I say that because the parks at night attract the younger crowds and although most are harmless the chance to encounter more dangerous characters significantly increases at night in the parks.
It’s been fine...was getting “interesting” in the summer—probably worst in July— but it’s gotten better since.
