I’m 31 and getting my MBA right now. This is a great thread to read as I start the first week of my classes. What other pearls of wisdom can y’all share? Folks in my cohort are all scrambling around frantically printing documents and spending hours prepping for cases and assignments each day. The recruiting mayhem will begin soon. What should I focus on most? Networking, recruiting and then academics? What should be the order of priority?
Almost none. Good advice that i got going in ws to make a list of your goals and stick to them. For me the top one's were: get a consulting internship/job, pursue international opportunities, pursue a specific non profit program my school offered, make awesome friends / have a great time. Once you know your goals it makes it easier to prioritize between class / job networking / and social life. It also helps you focus on the extracurriculars you're really interested in (and definitely skip any you're not interested in, maximize your free time and enjoy yourself)
Not enough partying and STDs
Student loan debt
Going back to Deloitte...
Studying too much. I concentrated more on the classes, and not on making connections or interacting with other mba classmates.
Graduating in 2009...worst timing ever
Not realizing soon enough that you almost have to decide early on your first year what career you want to have after the MBA.
No such thing as partying too much during mba
Not partying enough. That's how you build your network.
This feels like a good thread
Not socializing enough. Going to MBA too early - should have been a little older to appreciate it.
Wish I would've given Banking a shot for the summer before landing on consulting
Should have done it sooner
That I didn’t like strategy & operations in consulting post MBA 😂 Tech gets it done
Debt. I partied plenty.
Debt
Not realizing how regionally focused recruiting usually is. If you want to work in a region/city, get your MBA there.
Not paying off some of my loans while i was in school
Not using the 2 years to finally lose all the weight I put on and get in shape
Studying too much, not going earlier (although I waited until I was sponsored so it worked out). Wish I’d traveled more as well
