For women breaking into tech can be difficult. I will be graduating from a coding bootcamp this month and I’m currently on my job search. Is there anyone who broke into a software engineering position who could share what your journey was like and could share any advice as I continue my job search? Thanks!

I havent had to "break into tech". But I'm in data science and what helps is also doing projects on your own outside of work or picking up freelance gigs on platforms like upwork. You can even take part in Kaggle competitions and list your ranking or that as project experience. Its just another way to add experience on your resume

Thank you! This is great advice. I plan to work on more projects to solidify my skills after I graduate from my bootcamp. I have never heard of Kaggle competitions. I will check those out.

Hi there, I’m not in that role but I did break into tech. The most helpful things that I’ve learned are doing [1] 1:1 informational interviews with folks that do have the role to learn how they did it [2] creating a portfolio to showcase your work during those 1:1 so that you can show and tell as have questions [3] leverage LinkedIn by targeting the specific companies you want to get into, find connections you have, reach out or ask someone to reach out on your behalf (i.e. 2nd degree connection) [4] focus on people you know and developing connections (rather than just churning job applications, focus on the human side of it). At the end of the day it’s going to be more helpful to make relationships and invest time and energy to learning new skills in your field.

Thank you Ingrid for your advice. I have recently been having more informational interviews lately and they have been so helpful.

Do you have other work experience outside of tech, and you’re now switching career paths? If so, try looking for tech jobs outside of tech companies - i think a lot of them are more open to folks with other professional experiences. I’ve heard good things from people in JP Morgan’s Software Engineering Program who have found it to be a good entry way.

Yes, I worked as an Admin Assistant for years in the civil engineering industry and in the health insurance industry. I will check out JP Morgan. Thank you!
