Sharing my interview experience with JP Morgan Chase India: I gave 3 rounds of interview for a VP position spending total of 3 hours including a coding test of 1 hour as part of 3rd round. The panel was from U.S. and they appeared very interested at every stage. However, as soon as I finished the 3rd round, they went silent. As per my self assessment, I performed well in the coding round. However, when I followed up I was told that they are considering an internal candidate for that position. JPMorgan Chase

I put a bunch of dumb stuff that wasn't even kind of advertising in my book. Got hired to work on an account that thought "warm" was the only human emotion, even though it's not an emotion at all. Proceeded to write anything but heartwarming spots until they got tired of me, compared me to an ape playing with feces, and pawned me off to another team where I could write like a delinquent.
Honestly this feels like some of the Maximum Efforts spots, and I love them. Ryan Reynolds man crush aside.
Best advice I’ve been given is to fill your book with the kind of work you want to be hired to make.
This 100%
All of the above is good advice. Just start writing funny stuff, try to throw a joke into your scripts, or start with an absurd, funny premise. I hated comedy. I’m not funny. But I can write it. A few years later and now that’s a bulk of the work I’ve done.
I do freelance satirical article writing for various humor publications
The Onion, McSweeney’s, Slackjaw, Weekly Humorist, Points In Case among others! If you’re interested in satirical writing, here’s a list of dozens of ones you can submit to. Some even pay: https://twitter.com/kunkeltron/status/1343315473371430916?s=21
My student book was full of comedy, nothing else. And that helped me get a job at a place that did humor well. That said, it took a while to get there
Honestly without seeing it, it’s impossible to say. But I’d start by heeding the advice above, that your book should represent the kind of work you want to make. So if you love doing both comedy and serious stuff, terrific, show that. It’ll make you look more well rounded. I’m sure people have passed over me for jobs because my work is basically all comedy.
If I’m looking at books, for me it’s about quality of ideas anyway. Can you come at a brand in a way I’ve never seen before? Can you use a product truth in a really unique way? Whether it’s comedy or something else, being smart and original is everything. And that’s the great thing about a student book, you don’t have to sell the ideas to clients, only creative directors. So being a little out there and surprising helps you stand out
Showed up. Told them i was looking a job where I’d have work-life balance. They stared at me for three seconds before bursting into tears of laughter.
I got the job. It wasn’t on purpose. I’m rich now.
