For years people have told me that I'm good under pressure and never seem phased. The truth is that it's because I just don't care. We're not exactly saving lives here.

THIS! People don’t understand me when I say this, but it’s the truth. I mean, I don’t not care to the point of performing crappy work or being a bad employee. Quite the opposite, actually. I’m just not gonna lose my sanity over an audit. It’s not that deep to me tbh. I still appreciate the “cool, calm, and collected” compliments, but if only more people knew why I was so cool, calm, and collected they’d realize it’s less of a skill and more of an attitude.

My first boss told me “He who cares the least, wins!” Her point was that being over-invested in something clouds your judgement

I really admire that. How can I get some of that attitude? I care way too much and it's not helpful. It stresses me out and doesn't even improve my performance.

“It’s less of a skill and more of an attitude” I’m going to print that out and hang it in our lobby, so true. You’re way less productive when you’re stressed out putting out fires, it’s not that big of a deal

I worked in retail during HS and college. Worked way too hard and took it too seriously. The extra effort was a waste and my life is no better than if I had cruised by. Applied this approach to PA. Do the bare minimum needed to be slightly above mediocre. It's pass/fail. Shoot for those 75s.

I agree with the sentiment but some days are overwhelming even though I give zero shits. Just dealing with the volume of interruptions, even if you’re ignoring them can be a challenge

The only time i didnt care was when i was about ready to quit...

Truth!

In my 11 years in PA, when I worked extremely hard and outperformed everybody, I got the x+2 or +3 % raise, while sacrificing a lot on personal life side. When I worked just above mediocre and got things done and got through the day, my raise was x and even +1 % at times and was very satisfied on the personal side of life. Truth is, we are all in it to make some difference, but not like the emergency physician and/or any kind of emergency personnel (fire, ambulance, police, military, etc.), so there is no point in killing your self (unless you truly want to be a partner, then that’s a different story). Do a good enough job and balance your personal life and you will do great as a more overall person. Chasing too much of one thing has never made anyone happy...
