Compensation

Forget COVID and the economy being in shambles. If I want to max my salary by jumping to a new firm, every few years, but don’t want to be seen as a flight risk, how often should I jump? For context I’m coming up on my one year anniversary and am also one year out of school making $74,700 in DC. Thanks!

I’d probably debate the premise (that jumping ship allows you to maximize salary long term)

Agree with BCG1. If you have too many 2 year stints, over time it will look like something is wrong... Maybe you can't commit, or you keep burning relationships and have to leave after 2 years, or you don't have what it takes to stay and build something. It's fine to have a few jumps, but it's better to have a couple longer stays. Better option: don't jump around for money. Jump to find something you actually like doing and stick with it when it's good. Over time, make it yours and make it better for those who work for you. The money will follow and will be sweeter for the impact you were able to have.

Generally 2 years is a safe bet nowadays. If you get promoted in that time, best to have a year between your promotion and when you leave, but no hard rules on that if you don’t care as much about optics (or potentially rubbing the team that promoted you the wrong way)

You're in a good spot so don't be too aggressive. At some point you just have to be able to perform at a commensurate level to justify the high salary, so you'll want to place a premium on learning an industry and skillset. All that said, my recommendation would be to make the jump every 2-4 years. Stay longer if you get promoted and are learning and earning more.

OP I think your salary is decent for DC. If you were to move to HCOL like NY or SF your 1 YOE could fetch 100+

Also I totally under your lose a lot jumping ship often but for the sake of the example forget that!

my take is 1.5 - 2 yrs. enough to show you learned something, but short enough to get some sizeable raises

so in your case slower if you want to stay in that space. you would want to Switch to IB, AM, or PE for faster tracks within finance salary wise, but you would leave consulting. If you want to stick with consulting, you would leave fed roles and do either tech or strat work for faster increases.

No one really cares about jumps. It's just common these days.
