Found out I am getting a promotion out of a re-org…. Yay! Is it appropriate to negotiate the offer when there was no posted position to “apply” to? My old school retired father advised no — just smile and say thank you (unless I’m ready to walk away). However, with the current economy and state of everything, is it really so offensive? Is there a way to say thank you *and* I need a bigger bump? Help!

I recently went through a restructure of department payscales and wish I had negotiated. Now a year later I have been taking on more and more responsibility (supervising others) but they won't make it official since they are stuck overhauling the whole organization's payscales. Basically everything is frozen in terms of performance based raises and promotions.

If you have reasons to warrant a bigger bump (e.g. upcoming change in responsibilities, experience etc) then ask for it while they are open to making changes!

helpful

Definitely optimize the opportunity to negotiate as your SPOC is increasing with that is more accountability which equates to risks. However, they may frame it as challenges, which we all embrace but inherently it is additional risks. This may not be direct cash, it could be equity. Flex your muscle but be prepared.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Just curious about, is there really any impact on your career if you switch a company within a year, not for money but for good work and WLB.

Are the hiring managers going to weigh it while hiring you in future?

Like HM would reject just because you switched that early before, even if you skills are good fit?

Just hearing a lot of noise around it and want to hear from professionals here.

I just got promoted to project manager at a primary research firm 3 months after starting as an associate, hitting target at 150% on average (it usually takes 6-12 months to get promoted). The only thing is that you can’t really transfer recruiting skills to another industry, and I’m only on month 4 at my current company. What should I do?

As a minority and a woman working at the corporate level, I constantly feel the challenge to feel more apologetic whenever I “put my foot down” compared to my male counterparts. I know I shouldn’t have to, but I always feel like “putting my foot down” will make me appear like I’m not a team player. What I mean by putting my foot down, is being proactive, stern, and being equally assertive as my male counterparts in the same professional manner. Any advice or thoughts?
