Found out that in-laws (63 yr old) have been contributing almost every year to Roth IRA, but have kept it in cash. I asked why they did invest and they just said they didn’t want the amount to go down (facepalm)...I’d like to try and persuade them into at least investing some of this in a safe way (ETFs, bonds?) until they retire in a few years. Any recs on what to invest in? Not sure how much is in the account exactly, but I’m sure it’s at least 150- 200k.

Ha my response was moreso of the responses you'd receive from this bowl. Best advice is find your in laws a planner or some sort of retirement advisor. Otherwise you'll deal with them asking questions when their portfolio goes into the red for the first time.

Dude. Join the club. I know people the same way. They don't believe in equities at all.

Can you imagine how much that would be worth now if they've been doing this say for the past 35+ years? $1.5M+ TAX FREE! They could easily live another 20 to 30 years so I believe it would be worth to invest a portion, dependent on how much of it they need to use annually. I give investing advice to in laws all the time... he asks my opinion all the time. So nothing wrong with trying to help. At this age, I would give the standard boring answer of an S&P fund for it.

Lol, what’s the point of having money in a Roth account if it’s not invested? Just so you don’t touch it?

Can someone help me understand how backdoor Roth works in my situation?

I contribute the $19.5K max to a 401K each year. Would backdoor Roth be (A) the ability to roll $6K of that $19.5K into a Roth? or (B) an incremental $6K that I could contribute to a separate IRA then backdoor into a Roth?

Asked another way, does backdoor Roth allow me to actually contribute $25.5K each year, or does it just allow $6K of my $19.5K contribution to build in a Roth?

Thanks!

Hey all I have an opportunity to buy a vacation home as a private sale from my parents (they are buying a new house in that area and need to sell the old one), it is waterfront property in NH 10 minutes from Mt Sunappee. I am concerned that making this purchase may make me a little cash poor in the short term, but still manageable. Would it make more sense to rent out the property through a rental company that included insurance and cleaning or to put it on airbnb?

Product Design Engineer, interviewing at Apple (Cupertino) and at Meta (Seattle/Redmond). Not at the offer stage yet, but I'm contemplating where I would relocate with family.
No idea about team/culture/stability differences yet.

The non-work factors I'm debating are:
1. Cost-of-living (housing!). Could probably afford a nice ~$1.25M SFH in Seattle suburbs sooner than a fair $1.5-2M near Cupertino.
2. Public School quality. Unsure private will be affordable.
3. Weather/region: activities

He sold his house before being approved for the new one he put in for (against my advice). I know he won’t understand and will take this personally, and the family will probably take his side.
