Found out this week an old friend is now having a kid. This person is a good human but for a variety of reasons, they aren’t so great when it comes to anything romantic with the opposite sex (myself, mutual friends, etc). They managed to get pregnant with someone lives across the country from their old neighborhood. Instead of being happy for them, I hate that the only thing I can think is this will always come to mind taking safe sex precautions knowing that it was definitely unplanned.

I'm considering a Research Lead offer from a Series A start-up in NYC and admittedly don't really know how to evaluate it. First user research hire and the pay is US $178K plus stock options of 7100 shares. I think the pay is a bit low for the current market, but not sure how to assess the shares. I noticed they have no 401K or IRA, and they don't say anything about parental leave policies. Is this typical for a Series A start-up to not offer retirement plans? And is this fair comp? Thanks!

Anyone else have a parent who blatantly favors their most irresponsible, underachieving child? I earned a scholarship and worked through college, didn't receive more than a few thousand dollars from my parent during college and grad school. Sibling loses scholarship due to too much partying, so parent pays most expenses and tuition so sibling can continue to party and not get a job. Sibling almost fails out of grad school, but barely lands a job. Parent is now buying sibling new car.

Funny experience - I was in the line at a craft store and started chatting with the people around me. Person in front of me was annoyed about having to craft valentines for her kid's class. Person behind me was getting a late start on his kid's science project. They asked me what I was in for. Me: oh I don't have kids, so I'm picking up a new hobby (watercoloring). Them: oh. You must have a lot of free time and money huh. Me: yeah it's pretty great 😃👍

Misled on Maternity Leave Policy. I found out I only get 4 weeks pay for maternity leave (STD +“sick days”). I will take 12 weeks but wont get paid for 8 weeks. I work for a US, west coast based company in the tech/VC industry. Their website claims to offer “paid parental leave and other progressive benefits for parents”. I didn’t find out until after I was hired their pay was only 8 weeks but since I have been at the company less than 12 months, I don’t qualify for their policy. Is this unfair?

Has anyone here used the "Read Scripture" app? It goes through the entire Bible and includes accompanying summary videos from "The Bible Project" (whose videos can also be found on YouTube). I love how it groups portions of Scripture and the videos are helpful for making meaningful connections with the text. I love these for myself, but they're super kid-friendly, too. Has anyone else in PDM received one of these “you’re selected to be an Onboarding Advisor” emails? 2 of my coworkers got one and they seem to be expected to advise new hires on how to do resumes, skills, staffit, DTE, introduce them to their network, send welcome emails, checkin with them multiple times and answer their onboarding questions.
