I started a new full-time job 3 months ago. My teammates only escalate small mistakes to my boss; I rarely get positive feedback on the things I go above and beyond on. I have a review coming up this week, and I don’t feel secure. A role that I applied to pre-covid became available. I got a verbal offer last week. Should I leave a full-time gig for a temp-perm one? My new employer sent me a work laptop and today in an onboarding call, the HR said that all employer laptops have an ActivTrak monitoring system and anyone who is away for more than 20 minutes will immediately get a call about less than a number of hours. I am thinking of buying a jiggler mouse which keeps moving on the screen so that it keeps the status active but I'm not sure whether the laptop can detect this or not. I hear of UX/Product designers that make 120k out of school and recruiters are throwing out numbers even greater than that. No visibility into what my coworkers are making so I’m here.

I have 8 years of design experience in addition to design education, 3 of those years are in UX/Product design. I’m making $102k, med/vis/dental, up to 6% 401k match, unlimited PTO and options worth ~10k vested in a couple years. Bonus last year was ~10%. NYC startup.

How do you deal with the constant rejection in the job hunt as a entry level UI UX candidate? I’ve watched my spouse make it the last rounds of multiple interviews, just to get rejected, and the last interviewer told him he didn’t have as much detail in his portfolio as she’d like to see. Any advice I can share with him on how to pick yourself up and make meaningful progress in the job search?

Self-taught AD here without any design background looking to up my design chops. Are there any courses you can recommend that I take (regardless of cost) that can be done alongside a full-time job?

I want to create a data visualization portfolio, but I’m not sure where to begin. I work in urban planning and wanna do more urban analytics kind of stuff. Does anyone have any pointers for me as to where to begin and what all different types of visualizations I should be aiming to include? I’ve used R and Excel for this so far. I’ve done some web mapping using JS as well and use illustrator for my visualizations as well. Thanks!
