I am a FT employee and freelance on the weekends for non-competing industries. I will say there is WLB if you are able to hold yourself accountable to boundaries, but it’s hard. And tbh once you realize you can “make your own raise” you will end up freelancing more than you want. It’ll take up your evenings and weekends, then mornings… but I’m money motivated so I deal with it. I do find that freelance work ebbs and slows, so I tend to do more in winter when there’s not much to do and then take on less in summer to enjoy time with friends & family.
Very interesting, I understand! Thank you, I will think about it :)
I know it’s not the same but I contracted through an agency for a bit and it definitely stretched me, helped grow my skills, learn new ways of doing things..etc. At the same time, I fell behind in certain platforms I was used to working in daily, I learned that not big agency had good systems or a work flow in place, and not every team works as a team. Plus the benefits were on me. It was definitely a great experience and I had time off if I wanted it but I lost the comfort of having coworkers. Ultimately I went back to full time but it wasn’t because I didn’t like contracting, it was because I found a company that I really liked. Post contracting, I knew more about what other places were doing and what I did and didn’t want to do. I would still recommend it though, there’s something about going out on a limb and working for yourself that helped me personally and I gained an appreciation for so many things (coworkers, benefits and the familiar things.)
It’s worth a shot if you’re willing to put in the work and the money was super great (but also I had to hire someone to do my complicated taxes haha).
If you have questions or want to talk through it I’m here.
Otherwise, best of luck! You got this!
Wow! Your experience is really amazing. I can understand why now you are more aware about what you want to do. Thank you for the explanation. This really helped me to see things clearly 😊💪🏻
Yes. You can do both. However, you may need to be prepared to tilt the scale toward work to do both well.
