Hi Fishies! (Is that what we are? I’m going with it)
I just came across a Google Research and Insights role that got me SUPER excited and I was about to apply when I had the idea of seeing if anyone would be willing to give me a referral. I understand (and respect) that most of you Googlers on here feel that a referral is only useful if you know the person but I would be happy to jump on the phone to give you some info about me. It would mean so much! 4 YOE at a major audio steaming service

With no sign on? That’s interesting
If you’re a PHD why not stay in academia? At many large state schools some of the highest paid PHDs only teach 1-2 classes (though they tend to have a couple of PhD candidates they supervise) and write articles for academic journals/do research and make 2-3x that. Plus they live in places with low cost of living because that’s where most state schools are.
Because professorship is almost impossible to come by these days. Academia is shit and there are way more PhDs than tenure track positions. Sure you can be an adjunct and get paid $4k per class and have to scrape by
Seems pretty decent to me, but you can always ask before signing the offer.
Fresh PhD to senior scientist? I've worked in industry research myself and that seems pretty generous title wise.
You need to earn it - you don’t just get it.
A lot of sign on bonuses are tied to people leaving another company with some sort of bonus and salary lost due to changing jobs.
If you went straight from college to PhD with no real world experience… welcome of the real world.
Thanks, I got other offers with sign on bonus, that’s why I’m asking haha. I got your point though.
You should be offered sign-on bonus. The base pay is competitive, but there should be cash bonus offered as well. That's the general rule. I was hired as a senior scientist two years ago and was offered cash sign on bonus
