Friend is a current senior in college and asked me what’s a better Actuarial analyst at United Health or financial services at Deloitte?

Depends how high they go and when they exit. Earlier in career, consulting pays better but I assume actuary has better exit ops due to gaining more hard skills (from exam prep and all). If they follow the consulting career ladder and succeed, they'll probably make more and have better exit ops. If they fail, they would've had better pay and exit ops as an experienced actuary with actuarial certs or exiting into tech company data roles. Not sure company brand matters much for actuaries, since it's a profession with cert barriers to entry.

Depends what defines “better” WLB, probably UH. Money, experience, exit opp? Deloitte

Financial transformation at Deloitte was a leader, globally, for well over a decade or 2...although its importance is diminishing, i think that holds some weight to it. I have no great affinity to the fin group, but I'd say deloitte finance has more shine to it. UH however may be 100% what the person is looking for in terms of lifestyle, specific skill development, or even industry focus.

New manager for a team. 1 person is not pulling their weight (is assigned less because he is also new, but still misses deadlines, regularly misses the mark on prioritizing and communicating, slows down other work streams by publicly asking questions and giving feedback that isn’t requested). Any advice on how to sensitively bring up that he’s not (cont)

Thought I'd share this for inspiration. I was eating right and working out for the past few weeks and my weight on the scale was not budging which in turn was demotivating me. Yesterday was my first rest day and cheat day. I also slept a full 8 hrs. This morning I stepped on the scale and voila! Down 6 lbs. This has motivated me to keep pushing. Another 15 lbs to my target. lesson learned - Trust the process!

Looking for advice. I’m currently interviewing for a position that pays $20k more than I make now. It seems like the job would not be giving me much for my portfolio and may have some work/life balance issues (but tbh what agency doesn’t). I’ve got piles of student loan debt. I’m only in year 2 of my career. Do I take this job for a year, deal with the downsides, pay off a huge chunk of my debt, then get back to fun stuff? Or will it hurt my career to have a portfolio gap?
