You probably think CD/ad copy feedback is good because you’re not a copywriter and have less understanding of what good copy feedback is than good art feedback. 🫡
Some fair point. But a few of the things you said is not what I meant at all. I didn’t say that any literate person can do a CW work.
I just said that we are familiar with the language more than most CW are familiar with the basics of art/design to be able to voice it properly. Make it pop is a constant feedback I get and means absolutely nothing.
I’ve had the opposite experience, speaking generally. But I’ve also experienced this person you’re mentioning. My feeling is any CD should be well rounded enough to be able to at least speak both languages (they don’t have to be able to produce in both).
Chief
I’ve yet to work with a CD (AD) that gives copy feedback better than most senior writers can, beyond things they like and things they don’t.
We were probably coworkers then.
It’s funny, in my experience copy CDs comment on the concept more than AD CWs who only look at design and don’t comment on the overall idea. Also, are you sure you understand what good copy feedback is, as an art director? Does your CW agree with you on this? Just curious.
I’m an AD. But I also took AP English and 3 years of creative writing in college. I feel very well equipped to do both sides of the job. But yeah, some folks are more one sided. Both ADs and CWs. By the time you’re a CD, you should know enough of the other discipline to be able to doggy paddle, at least.
I'd like to think that I use phrases like letting, kerning, negative space, and balance just as well as any art director. Even better if you are comparing the quality of the sentences we use them in.
I even know what verbs to use with them - you loosen or tighten kerning (and you're damn right I'm just showing off now).
Point is, the OP comment applies to their specific situation not some real state of the world or systematic issue. They'll hopefully get to work with better equipped creatives in the future and we all pray for that. 🙏
I don’t see why these two need to be compared. Both excel in different areas, and their opinions are bound to be different. Maybe you agree with what you better understand.
