Don’t blame the producer. Sure a horribly worded and executed email is forgivable, the real problem here (as this movement is uncovering) is the system is f*cked.
Some creatives saw the boards, presented a proactive idea, it quickly got approved up the chain, the clients signed off and everyone wanted to win a Cannes Lion. It’s that simple and disgusting.
I’m not defending it, it’s an appalling email.
But if I had to give the producer the benefit of the doubt I think “still relevant” meant while the windows were still boarded up. I don’t think they were implying that the movement was only relevant this week.
Again, it’s a horrible choice of words and it deserves to be called out.
I wonder which Art Producer at M:United sent out this message.
IMO this misses the point entirely. McCann will blame the messenger but this is the result of the agency’s culture of shameless attention-seeking and self-promotion.
Yesterday’s discussion of this for the curious: https://joinfishbowl.com/post_nz4qsh

Fire them.
Who?
The art producer didn’t come up with this idea, they’re just delivering the message for the creatives who came up with it and the CD who approved it.
Wow on so many levels

Unreal.

I am having PTSD from yesterday’s discussion. Apparently it’s not the producers fault, it’s the fault of senior management at McCann and Microsoft your fault for commenting and not understanding that.

So many accounts at so many agencies are guilty of this
I’ve had to make so many cringe worthy emails before for other ideas. Not racially charged, but opportunistic requests to say the least.
The M United Instagram account is private...I was curious how they were responding, but I guess they are not.
What are we really mad at? The ask itself, the ask of a black artist or the way to was asked?
Does anyone on here actually work on the account at M:United in the account and can speak to the makeup of the team? The intent? How it all went down? We need answers not assumptions.
I’m mad at the wording “still relevant”. We’ll always be relevant.
Are we ok with this mural done by a white woman in Portland? Are we not supposed to tell our own stories?
I understand and I’m slightly confused.
The vanilla ice of murals.
Our office was tagged in one of the recent marches and my ECD has asked me to do something like this - a mural to support our black community. I’m the only creative of color in the office and he said he wanted me to be part of it, as representation. He said he wants to create beauty out of something ugly, but I know it’ll be used as self-promotion. I’m not sure how I feel about it.
No one should tell you how to feel. If you feel like it comes from a sincere place and they actually want change go for it. If the fact that you’re the only black person in the office bothers you to the point of not wanting to do it, have an honest conversation with her/him. It’s all constructive and you can create change there.
