A great graphic designer should be able to bring awesome look n feels to the table that makes the project feel unique but still in the same design standards. Great taste and attention to detail is super important, as well as keeping track of current design trends and knowing when to use them. Also being fast as heck is a huge plus.

Someone who doesn’t just paint wireframes and change the font, but truly transforms my work. Someone who considers tone of voice of the product/ brand to create an experience that feels authentic. Someone who will question my UX choices in an open collaboration— not so much to prove me wrong but to actually understand why I made choices I did so that design reflects it (but also if something feels wrong not being afraid to say it!). Someone who understands what being responsive truly means and ensuring their designs don’t require a large dev effort when switching devices. Finally, someone who pays attention to accessibility rules. I should never have to pull up the color contrast checker or tell you your font is illegible, your icons aren’t intuitive, etc.

My favorite designers are ones that collaborate with me, push me, and remind me why I’m not creating the UI (because they have far more talent than me). My favorites are passionate about creating a great, beautiful product, and not just when it’s a cool client.

A great graphic designer understands file sizes cannot be massive, follows briefs, and delivers on time. They show up to meetings. They value the other team members and realize that the team as a whole creates advertising/marketing success. A great graphic designer keeps their ego in check and stays up to date on changes in technology and methodology.

In short, a great graphic designer is someone you actually want to work with.

Good designers design aesthetically pleasing artwork with consistent visual cues and tones that can translate across all platforms from tiny web banners to billboards. They know how to sell their work properly to clients and it can help drive sales and solve problems without too much artistic compromise. A good designer knows how to concept and execute work quickly and keeps their files tidy and organized for handing off to other departments. They know whatever app it takes to get the job done and are open to exploring new software as trends evolve (ie: sketch for UI work, flash ten years ago, etc)

helpful

I don't care how good your design is if you don't understand the bigger picture the peice isn't going to fit. A good designer needs to be able to balance work that's going to progress their career and work that's going to progress the company. Be able to learn and iterate upon past work, not just regurgitating prior designs over and over again like my team... (says design but I'm more on the CRO side)

smart

Someone who cares about the work in all aspects. Someone who is collaborative with the team.

Uses the data available to influence design,
Proposes tests/ alt versions to test

The great graphic designers have their own style and voice, they’ve honed their craft to speak in a way that only they could.

I am a registered sales assistant which means I have my series 7. I also have the 63 and my Life & Health license. I was a financial advisor but the role is commission only so I decided to take a role as an assistant for some time to learn etc. I really like my role, but I only make 32k a year and after taxes I only take home about 25k. I have a gut feeling that I’m not being paid market value but it’s tough to find comparable salaries. Do you think $15.38/hr is a fair wage in this case?
