Fun fact - Nigerian-Americans are one of the most educated ethnic group in the United States. According to the Migrations Policy Institute, 29% of Nigerian-Americans have graduate degrees (compared to 11% of the overall American population).

I'm Nigerian and while it's a cool fact, it's also apparent in consulting, and we're often used as the diversity count while firms refuse to address the systemic disenfranchisement of Black Americans.

Education is great, but also the reason we're so educated as an immigrant group is because they literally won't let us in without our education.

It ends up being a statement of pride in our socioeconomic class (while others at home and in the states don't have the same access to opportunities) and that just doesn't sit right with me.

What?

I called it earlier, let’s not focus on Nigerian, Jamaican or African American. Let’s all try to use our strengths collectively to empower our community. I have tried to collaborate and create strong partnerships in our communities but it’s sometimes met with coldness. If we black folks collaborate and pool our resources together we can really achieve a lot. Money is good but supporting and empowering our communities is even better. Also remember someone back in the day paved the way for what we all partially enjoy right now.

Great info- How does this help this group? Be careful not to create unnecessary angst among the black community.

I wanted to get more insight into this and create a discussion thread on education and disadvantage. I come in peace✌🏾

Fun fact, white men that only graduated high school have higher income and wealth than their college graduate non-white counterparts. Another fun fact, black women are the highest educated group in the US, but have an average net worth of $5.

I think these collective fun facts just highlight that having a college degree is only a moving goal post for nonwhites in the system of white supremacy. Don’t confuse trinkets for wins in a system of oppression.

This is such a Nigerian-American thing to post lmaoooo

I’m struggling with figuring out what the purpose this post is. Like A2 stated, there are much bigger conversations to be had to help each other. I’m black with a total of 5 degrees. Is there a question that you’d like to ask the group?

likehelpful

Thats easily explained. Its due to the immigrant advantage. Nigeria doesnt send its idiots to America, much like other countries. The same with the Asians. Usually the brightest most resiliant and driven come to the U.S. If you were to go to Nigeria, China, and India, you will also see plenty of downtrodden people as well.
I found it interesting that Asian men outearn white men in this country on average when I read that in a report about employee wages.

like

That is a fun fact indeed!

But not that surprising given how difficult it can be to immigrate, I imagine people need to have something like wealth or access that the average person does not. Or is this high level of education true broadly for the country of Nigeria as well, do 29% of people in Nigeria have graduate degrees? If so, why do so many Nigerians come to the US to study, work, and live instead of just remaining in their home country?

like

Spend a month in Nigeria. Scratch that. Spend a weekend and you’ll figure why.

I’ll ask a question since OP can’t/won’t.

Do we think that it’s easier or harder for black immigrants to have success in America than their Black American counterparts?

I think it actually can be easier because:
- they’re not encumbered by where they’re born / grow up (immigrants generally choose which metro area they want to try to make it in)
- they aren’t influenced by the negative factors that established black Americans have to deal with that can weigh heavily on black minds

Thoughts??

1. There are not nearly enough Jobs in Nigeria, most are inaccessible government jobs reserved for nepotism and cronyism
2. The private sector is relatively small as a portion of the entire economy and most of even that is dependent on government funds in some shape or form, so again many can’t find employment even with advanced degrees which many do have even in Nigeria.

Hope that helps.

Fun facts are thought provoking and meant to act as a catalyst to drive discussions for the most part. I didn’t post this to create angst or have a specific agenda to “uplift”. I understand people are sensitive but we have got to do better with some of these comments. To A3 “bigger discussions” ?? Please don’t devalue important topics like education and immigration with a baseless comment.

Considering your original point had no premise to stand on, you have little merit calling anything on my post baseless. I asked for clarity and you decided to be defensive and passive aggressive. Do better.

I make good money, but I feel like there are some gaps in my skill set that I would love to grow in big(ger) tech.
