Opinions wanted-Does randomly calling on students using a random generator create an emotionally safe classroom? I had a very quiet class last year where no one wanted to answer (Precalc) and I called on the students randomly and that caused anxiety among some students. I want it to be safe to answer, but of course I don’t know the students previous classroom experiences with other teachers. What are your best practices?

Feeling very down today. In my 10 years of teaching I have had furniture thrown at me, students destroy my classroom, call me a F@&ing B!+@= to my face, & more. But we are always able connect at some level. I get those "tough kids" year after year because I am good at building positive relationships over time. These same kids who would fight with me, would fight *for* me in a heartbeat. But this year is so different. They will steal from me and lie to my face with zero remorse or care. Over it.

I have a suggestion/ things you want me to know box in my classroom. Today one of my students put a note in the box saying her mom lost her job and she feels bad because she is the poorest student in the class. She said the other kids have cool things and she is poor. I want to help her but don’t want to offend her parents. Any suggestions?

Does your school have a hat/hood rule?? I just don’t really see the point. I do not care at all if a student wants to wear a hat or feels inclined to put their hood up. What are everyone else’s thoughts? Should I care about this? I feel like I have bigger fish to fry this year!

Am I the only one who doesn't understand why teachers refer to the students as "friends"?

My District decided to initiate a “no zero policy” starting now. I was informed by administration that when a student does not turn in their work, I still have to give the student a fifty percent even though that student didn’t earn it. I teach sixth graders and I am not sure how I feel about this. Any words of advice?

Hello, How do you organize your classroom in terms of supplies? I have students who tend to make a scene , grab anything close to them and throw it everywhere. These are my more severe students. Spending another day questioning every decision ever made. I don’t like being a solo practitioner in an area that is incredibly difficult to not only win a case but to get paid for your time. I need to find an area of law I can work in and make money (preferably not family or criminal law). I would like to find a partner to work with, but I don’t even begin to know how to go about it. I am regretting going to law and leaving teaching, but you couldn’t pay me enough to go back to the classroom.

Anyone found a way that works to teach mid to high level students (courses) effectively besides a flipped model? Recording lessons without an audience is going to be the death of me, and live zoom session direct instruction isn't working.
