Gave boss a verbal commitment to stay on my current project for a year... fast forward 8 months, a better opportunity came up... having a moral dilemma on whether take the new opportunity or stay put.

These answers saying “go” aren’t wrong, but they’re not necessarily right either. How much do you respect your current boss? How devastating would it be if you lost this connection because of it? Do you think they would understand and encourage you to go? In my experience, if you have a great relationship they’ll understand your desires and encourage you to leave anyway, which removes you from the position of stating that you took an opportunity. This is my long-winded way of saying “talk to your boss and if you’re close you’ll get what you want without asking.”

It’s hard to be a man of your word in this business. Think about it this way. If the project was told to cut 75% and it made sense to cut you, do you think your boss would have the same moral dilemma? Nope! You can be Jonny saves the project and they cut you first chance they get. To be fair there is always a better opportunity. Those better opportunities don’t always work out as expected. My advice, if you are happy where you are ride it out. If the better opportunity is a once in a lifetime opportunity take it. I’ve never taken a job that was as described, so I only roll the dice on better opportunities when all my options are garbage.

If it came down to what would the company do? Go.

Be careful you might ruin a relationship with management. It depends what you want. Are you switching industries? Can you find a replacement for you before you move? If you’re a senior con and important person on the project it might be costly to let you go.

I recently transitioned to wfh full-time, in house. Amazing gig - I’m not complaining - but I literally never have to wear suits or anything fancy. Coworkers wear t-shirts, rarely blouses. My background is litigation, so I’m used to wearing sweaters, cardigans, suits, dresses. I don’t want to be the only one wearing business casual outfits but I can’t bring myself to wear a tank top/t-shirt and sweats/leggings every day. Advice for what to wear to wfh now that I’m just dressing for me? (Cont.)

Not proud of it, but I was hooking up with a co-worker/friend pre-COVID. I left the state when wfh started and we still talk every day, but nothing romantic. He made it clear at the beginning that he didn’t want to date because we’re co-workers. Stung a bit when I went on a dating app this morning and saw his profile. The rational part of me knows we’re only ever going to be buddies and that if he actually wanted me, then he’d make something happen. Looking for advice on how to get over this.

What are peoples opinions on work from home? It seems to be an unpopular opinion but as a junior I despise it. I work 3 feet from my bed, I find the barriers of a phone/email between me and a senior to add a huge amount of stress to my life and I think it’s stunting my career development at my firm because I can’t build relationships as effectively.
