I've been more or less out since my time as a senior manager. I've been lucky to have strong support from my peers, teams, and leaders. I am not completely out but don't hide it and bring it up at the appropriate times (discussing SO, etc). My firm (EY) is very pro-diversity and in my office they have a firm commitment to those values.
I had another partner in my promotion year who was gay and we keep in contact for support. It was helpful. I am open with my teams but cautious that clients may have negative reactions that I can't control. It doesn't stop me from being out but I don't make being gay as prevalent as during other aspects of my firm interactions or in my personal life.
I have never felt tokenized. I at times feel left out since I don't have a wife and my SO can't as easily integrate into some of the social aspects of partner life. But likely some of that is just me assuming we can't be as involved as a couple. I suspect other firm partners wouldn't have any issues.
Have you been out since you started your career? How have you seen things change in the workplace in terms of the perception of LGBT people?
How often have you felt left out because of your sexuality? Do you ever feel "tokenized" as "the gay partner?" How often and in what manner do you interact with your company's ERG?
PWC, I had self identified in the HR system, and my immediate sponsor knew, but the leadership didn't know I was gay (at least I don't believe they were aware and it was never mentioned during the process). I had a solid business case, ticked all the metrics and quality boxes, and firm performance in my service line (Advisory) had results that supported a promotion in my vertical and sub-service line.
I am Chinese who is gay and work at EY US PI. Thanks for the information. Definitely can feel the support from the firm!!😃
Do you have other partner colleagues that are Fay too? Are you open about being gay in your projects or that is something you feel doesn't matter?
Do you think it helped (diversity) or hurt (biases) your promotion ? Or irrelevant to it ?
How do you keep track of people you meet at networking events? How do you determine who to stay in touch with and who to forget?
Sorry that's not a gay question. But it's a question I've wanted to ask for a long time. I've had many.
DT, I add people to LinkedIn or exchange a business card. There a number of reasons to keep a connection but I tend to try to avoid people who are just looking to gain something from me.
Thx for the thread. Gay dude in the EY PP promotion process. Self identified in the system as well, and colleagues know. Discuss my partner when it comes up but am generally low key. People are generally indifferent, which is fine. My sector / sub service line doesn't have any gay PP that I'm aware of, which is frustrating. Hope to improve on that.
SM1, good luck with the process. If you want any EY specific advice or want me to help connect you to some other gay partners (depending on your office location), share a burner and we can chat offline.
SM1, what sector/SL are you in? IT Advisory/FSO here.
Partner, FSO IT Advisory
Partner OP - thx for the offer. I'd love to catch up. eyburner@gmail.com
SM1, I finally sent an email to your burner. Sorry, was offline most of the last couple weeks.
