“Without woman, you can’t even have a family with your next generation. Woman leads your life and woman continues your life, so dad, would you please shut up?”

That’s annoying and I wouldn’t let it go. It’s easiest to ignore but I’d argue each time if I have to considering it’s coming from the father. Tell him the reason you have a job and are financially independent is because of women in lead positions. Tell him you have the opportunity to be a partner of a multi billion $ firm, and you’d appreciate his support along the way not disempowerment. Tell him his oppressive and sexist views on women are backwards and they affect you. You can do more research about the effect of women in lead positions and offer supporting evidence as to why it’s CRITICAL that women are in lead positions.

As much as I’m appalled by his take on gender issues, I’m also appalled by some on this thread who think it’s ok to tell your Dad to shut up/fuck off. 😳 I grew up abroad and my own Dad is very traditional, always buggin me about getting married and having babies (I want neither) in my “advanced” age (mid 30s). 🙄 clearly, career should come after these life goals. I just ignore, he won’t change, he doesn’t understand my life and why it’s so different from what he has. I always say I’m going to live my life the way I want and cut those conversations short.

The “getting older” part is important. This happens a LOT. People who were more middle-of-the road during their early and mid-adult years tend to stake out and hold onto more extreme positions on a lot of issues as they get older. It’s part nostalgia for the way things “used to be” and part fear of being considered irrelevant, from what I’ve read. And trying to point out the hypocrisy in those positions is usually futile, as it sounds like you’ve discovered.

Dear Women. Thank you so much for the support and your thoughts! It is interesting to hear different perspectives on this topic. I just want to be better prepared since I also feel like this is the reality in some cases and Germany (where I live) is not doing a good job in supporting women in leading positions compared to countries like france, spain or even poland (very conservative). In my job we are 25 people and 10peeps are leadership. All male. At least at home I'd like to get more support 🙄 This constant battle is tiring but I will not ever give up!!!!

OP- Women’s rights are continuously challenged throughout the world in all aspects. I encourage you to keep at it and also due your due-diligence, whether it’s your dad, colleague or politicians, we have to fight against unconscious bias, disempowerment, discouragement, gender gaps, limitations of rights etc. Don’t let anyone silence you, you have a voice and a right to speak up anytime, regardless if the other person changes their views.

I lived in Germany—compared to Scandinavian countries is is still quite patriarchal.

‘Fuck off’?

here who has a great answer to that so I can finally shut him down?

I think the thousands of examples of men running countries, companies, and families into the ground speak for themselves. If one woman is the reason Germany is in bad shape then thousands of men are the reason the rest of the world is in bad shape. I’m too old to teach people things they should already know. I’ll say it once. After that, I have to rethink my relationship with you and what I am or am not willing to discuss with you. Boundaries are important. Barring mental illness or senility, if you continue to say things to me that I have expressed are hurtful, then clearly your relationship with me is not important enough to you for you to not be a jerk and I don’t feel the need to interact with you any more. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Anyone watching Indian Matchmaking? Aparna and her mother have to be the worst, right? She thinks she's a godsend and quite frankly she looks like a potato, is ignorant, doesn't sound nearly as intelligent as she professes to be, and is even more negative than I am! That's gotta say something.

Having a hard time figuring out where to buy a long term house. We both work in the city, and have a kid. We want decent space (is a yard too much to as for?), good schools, nice town, walking distance to the train. Yes - I’m hoping unicorns do exist. So far something like Bronxville and Scarsdale seem like good options. Open to checking out other towns in any region as long as the commute to Bryant park is close to an hour. Any suggestions?
