Genius talent, kiss ass, or am I doing this career thing wrong?

This happens when you have a boss that believes in you and you’re continuously delivering on accounts with high visibility of your agency c-suite. Your attitude also counts for a lot, so many in our job are beaten down and not very optimistic. Those with a ‘always say yes’ / ‘I’ll make it happen’ will flourish.

At my last job I came on as director and got promoted every year for six consecutive years until I was EVP Group level. Most of it had to do with the fact that the agency I was working at was absolutely killing it and my team went from me plus one to me having over 20 reports. My team and I also consistently got high marks from clients and visibly helped win and grow business. And yes, I learned how to play the political game to a certain extent. I'm also not particularly good looking. So it's a combination of luck and effort, with more emphasis on the luck side. But it's possible without being a kiss ass.

I’ve seen it happen before. They’re probably very attractive. I’m not even joking.

Pretty privilege is a very real thing!

It’s probably a combination of all three. And I’d bet a lot of money there’s a British or Australian accent there too.

To be fair, Account Sup to Strat Planner is a departmental shift, not necessarily a promotion.

This is why we deflate titles.

Maybe that person is just really talented?

Maybe 🤔

Timing and luck can play into it. Someone leaves and/or a new scope is signed.

VP isn’t a real promotion so I don’t really see the issue here

I have a Strategy Director reporting to me. VP >> Director, at least at some agencies.

Do you work for him? Or are you just looking at people’s careers on linked in and judging? (Also I know who this is, didn’t assume gender here)

I have worked with this person. He is genuinely fantastic.

I’ve had 3 ‘promotions’ in 3 years at my current place but here’s the reality of it I started as a GSD. A few months in our company got bought and to reconcile titles with the acquiring company, they gave me a VP title. Looks like a promotion when I changed my title on Linked In, but didn’t involve more $ and I had the same level of responsibility. My latest ‘promotion’ came with a ton more responsibility but not more $ due to Covid (although I wonder how much longer they can use this as an excuse). All that to say is that a promotion might look one way on paper but be different IRL. It’s unusual to get promoted every year, so it doesn’t mean you’re necessarily doing it wrong.

Sometimes VP is given for a salary bump if the company org chart won’t allow a promotion. I was once a VP Sr Copywriter before becoming an ACD. But you can’t ignore that this person became a group director in two years. I’ll lean toward positivity and think this may be a person to learn from.

Faker fo sho, just liked all of us. Stack that paper and don’t think twice about it.

This person is also probably underpaid relative to the market if this all happened at one agency.

Sad but true

How the heck would we know?

I have witnessed this before too it was an analyst to SVP in 5+ years. This person have nothing to show for it and everyone disliked this person. It was definitely nepotism and major ass kissing. I have witnessed people that skip levels and one even enter c suite but they genuinely are that good, capable and deserving of it. Being promoted every year sometimes is just a title change for optics with uneven/low compensation but it always comes with responsibilities matching the title so it’s not always great.

you forgot nepotism

Its unbelievable but I've actually seen this happen once.. I know someone who got in without an interview, without a portfolio.. They told me this. They struggled for awhile once they got in though.

I just moved to a foreign country and I am really in need of a job. I applied to a big 4 and spent weeks making it through interviews only to get turned down, because they wanted someone with big 4 experience. How can I get big 4 experience if a big 4 isn’t willing to hire me? I feel defeated.

Sometimes I think LinkedIn is a job killer . I have diverse backgrounds in various parts of tech, strategy, M&A etc and applying to multiple job roles . I get tons of interviews and getting rejected after final rounds . Any thoughts on how to keep LinkedIn very generic ? Keeping generic means I won’t get many messages on LinkedIn from recruiters. 😂😂

So today I was promoted to senior associate after just over 5 years at the firm. But I still want to leave. So my question is this - how many months should I stay for the guilt (explained below) to fade away before I leave? Guilt - the firm allowed me to work remotely in another country as I pursue a postgraduate degree. There are better opportunities in this country and the salary I would get as a starting salary here can never be matched by the firm.
