People are only able to rationalize a lot of things, not just the pandemic, in terms of its impact on them. With COVID the government, both federal and state, flips back and forth between speaking to that and speaking to societal benefit, which confuses people even moreso. So this is a helpful reminder but it is in opposition how many people are geared to think and rationalize their actions.

DOPF, why is doing something that protects others more than yourself stupid? That's such a weird statement

“There’s no reason to be walking around with a mask. When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is.“ Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Honestly, who hasn't made tons of money through investments during the pandemic? If you already had money, you made a lot of money. Also, that quote is both dated and out of context. A decade ago we all mocked Asian countries where people wore masks regularly. We were too stupid to realize it was the ones with colds wearing them, not the ones trying to avoid colds

Since apparently we like to get info from pictures, here is an infographic showing transmission rates based on who wears the mask Op your information is wrong and you should feel bad spreading disinformation that can harm people

1.5% eh... Must be why omicron spread like wildfire through non masked states and was practically halted through mask mandate states, amiright?

Who cares. It’s also true if I never drive again the risk to pedestrians of me hitting them in a crosswalk is reduced but I’m still going to drive. No one needs more fear based morality arguments. Live your life however you want and let others live theirs.

🤦 my gosh another one of these...Y’all with these masks and vaccine topic/debates.... When are we going to move on from this. ....how about we start nutrition and fitness threads to help with COVID...stuff that actually requires some real work and discipline...stuff that helps long term health.

likefunnysmart

Fitness, making better food choices and understanding of proper nutrition is addressing the underlying issue....mask or no mask, vaccine or no vaccine is a band aid solution to the real problem and a distraction in my “personal” opinion. Not here to start a debate though. Live by a different code. This is my personal philosophy. You do you. Others can chose to do what they want to do.

I live outside the US so we never stopped wearing masks where I am. But my question is, when do we stop the masks? Because I honestly don’t know how we can wear these forever. I’m so over them and I don’t think that’s selfish of me to say.

likesmartfunny

It is not selfish of you to say. Many people share that same sentiment and that doesn’t make you selfish, it’s simple pragmatism.

In an individualistic society like the US that has time and time again proven its' selfishness I think asking people to consider others when wearing a mask is asking too much.

Guess you missed the story where the CDC copped to making all of that up, with regard to cloth masks.

Did you stop reading prior to "as effectively as other masks?" And wouldn't the solution, then, be to wear better masks, since that article says they are more effective?

like

Certain masks have been shown to provide protection for the wearer, although if you’re referring to the cloth masks typically worn that’s correct.

Gentle reminder that this infographic isn't real world data and it's from spring 2021 prior to Delta and omnicorn so it is useless information :)

I’m a first time dog owner, got a covid puppy, and would appreciate some advice around what to do with my dog, if I have to return to the office 3 days a week. I imagine I’ll be gone for about 9 hours. Do people just pay the $20-30 for a dog walker in Toronto? Isn’t that a lot of money? My dog’s breed doesn’t actually need much walking but he definitely would get bored by himself for so long. I am so torn, between taking a work from home 4/5 days job vs intense hybrid corporate work.

My brother is a mechanic with 10+ years experience but was laid off due to COVID. He's having a hard time even finding jobs to apply for and asked me for advice. I don't even know what someone can do without a degree. He has valuable hard skills but I just don't think there's a demand in NYC right now. Should I advise him to go to school? He'd have to fully finance his degree and I'm just not sure if it's worth it for him to start over at the bottom, or what industry he'd even fit in...

There are millions of people dying of wars (like Afghan), famine (like Yemen) and also Covid. Why should I be okay with my company donating and speaking on my behave with so much focus on BLM? I agree it matters, but overall, we live a good life in the United States comparing to the rest of the word, regardless of race. The attention to race equality is important but I feel bad for the poor forgotten souls that are facing other issues on earth. They matter too?

I'm shocked by how many smart people on here emphasize the wrong things in preventing the spread of COVID. It doesn't matter if a place looks clean and feels safe. Clorox wipes and gloves do not help much. The issue is how much time you spend close to other people, especially indoors, whether or not you are wearing masks (and, if so, N95 or surgical) and the air exchange rate. It isn't "safe" to eat indoors at a restaurant because it looks clean and the staff bleach the tables.

Worst case, but still possible: Covid continues to spread for years despite any vaccine (the rest of our lives). Unemployment skyrockets and the US becomes a developing country with squalid conditions for the low-income. We lose social order and all need to hire private security guards to protect our homes from theft and violence. This also means no more vacations or fun events because the risk of something bad happening is too high. What are your thoughts on this?

People need to start flying, booking hotels, visiting retail stores. We need our sanity and economy back. We need to understand that if we do not allow our cash to circulate we are all going to be in trouble pretty soon. Enough of just buying on Amazon, liquor stores, weed man etc. Go back to your normal life and spending pattern and wear your masks and sanitize. I understand that most people live under fear but what is the point of being alive if you are not living. COVID-19 is here for a whols

So, I‘ve been chatting with a girl for a few months since this whole COVID thing started. She’s really cool and we get along great. Last week we met up in person and ended up “having fun”. The only thing is she basically has no boobs. Just nipples on her chest. I couldn’t tell before because we had only vchatted, but now I don’t know if I can get over it. I like big boobs. Should I tough it out and try and get over it, or just move on to another girl?
