Consulting

Genuine question: Is consulting actually hard to break into..? Don’t think I’m stupid, but my resume isn’t outstanding at all, so I do wonder if it’s actually hard to break in.

It can be, but the bar is certainly getting lower I went to a no name state school with a 3.1 GPA I think it’s about who you know, and what you can do. I would say it’s easier to get into than IB or FAANG, unless we’re talking about MBB/tier 2’s

I haven’t been able to break out of my boutique tech implementation firm to a name brand. If you don’t have relevant experience or get in during UG recruiting, breaking into traditional consulting is a much more demanding experience.

If you are a generalist it can be hard. They hire for characteristics, not skills (top tier schools, fancy internships). Those are a proxy for professional experience. If you are more of a specialist, it can be easier to break in because you have something specific of value that the firm needs. The more scarce or in demand it is, the better.

I see. Yeah, I have a lot of people that reach out to me asking, and I’m always incredibly confused at how stressed they are, when their backgrounds actually sound more impressive than mine. But I did get in directly from undergrad so that could be it too

2.77 GPA here. It’s about who you know and how you represent yourself. GPA just helps you get your first job (in my case it was also who I knew and being a vet). Regardless, once I was in the door I made SA in 1.5 years and outshine individuals that have told me they had 3.5+. Don’t compare yourself to others.
