It’s not unreasonable. You need to just do your research. I worked at a Fortune 500 and 98% of the days the job was 9-5 plus we took an hour for lunch.

Same happened to me PwC 4

It's not unreasonable. It's sometimes unobtainable.
Small teams = big task lists.
You just have to set boundaries.
My boss knows I'll move heaven and earth to close month/quarter end. But I'll take those hours from somewhere else.

Finding this to be true for me as well and it’s unfortunate
Oh, damn. Isn't WLB one of the major reasons to jump to industry? So I would think this is a reasonable expectation.

I work in financial services audit and can verify we're opening to hire part time seniors. I prefer part time at my firm to "great WLB" industry because:
1. You're being paid less, which gives you an easy "reason" to not work more without pushback. I'm comfortable saying no to too much work, but a lot of people feel like they can't push back when too much is on their plate because they're working "only" 55/60/70 hours and others work more.
2. Work is pretty clear/ straightforward and you can build year over year efficiencies (fave part!)
3. Clear career progression without working long hours.
4. Trust (team specific) . I was VERY lucky to join my firm straight out of college. I trust my team and they trust me. I will be efficient and make sure my engagements get done on time, and help out if I end up with free time. So if I work 9-4 and finish my personal work or delegate it by 2, I'll help other people to "pay forward" the benefits and help them log off early or at a reasonable hour. I don't gatekeep, accept upward feedback, and am comfortable raising issues when I see them. Not all teams are like this... From discussions with others in PA and industry it's way more rare than it should be

I think it depends on the size of your team. I’ve only worked on big teams and haven’t ever really had bad hours
It depends on the size of your team, role type, processes in place to make it more efficient, and other considerations, e.g., automated tasks, organization, etc. My team in industry (banking) had built-in automated tools and dedicated accounting teams for specific parts of the business. For financial reporting, we could link their provided reports to feed into our financial reports. My role was mainly 9-5 except for close. Management was open to automation wherever possible. Workday is a game-changer!

Yes unfortunately, unless you are in IA or Government expect to work long hours
Might as well stay at B4 after seeing how much my clients work 🙃
Do you know what they are working on exactly until midnight?
Industry jobs can often be brutally worse these days. Many companies have cut head count, and have also been trying to outsource less due to cost cutting measures. That makes life incredibly difficult.
Based on these comments I think small team is definitely part of the problem
I stayed in public and basically work 8-6(8-4 on Fri except in summer when I don’t work Fridays at all) but then I also work 7-10 on Sat and Sun. Something like that is more than doable with a very lucrative salary
Sorry but doesn’t that mean you’re working over 60+ hours a week?
Looking to jump into industry as well - did you ask about WLB during the interview?
I did impress the fact that work life balance was what I was looking for and didn’t receive indication that it may not be possible, unfortunately
