Most of the time they require prior recruiting experience. Entry-level recruiting assistant / coordinator roles wouldn’t require experience, but at that level the role is more about scheduling and sourcing. I’ve seen people move into recruitment from other areas of the agency, but those people often have shown a great eye for talent via referrals or have volunteered to help with events, university visits, mentorship, DEI, etc.

Thanks for the insights SM1. So it sounds like you see yourself as a people manager. But if the recruiter is the sieve that culls books for consideration for projects, shouldn't he/she know a bit about how to identify a concept, engaging creative, etc? I would think the good agencies would train their recruiters how to evaluate the work vs so much focus on admin/HR-like skills.
Like, if my job is to hire pizza makers, and I have never tasted pizza...how do I know if the pizza is good enough to share with my team?
Completely agree. Someone who is switching from creative into recruitment is a fantastic background but identifying work that has potential and screening candidates is only one slice of the pie. If that’s what you want to do, highly recommend large companies like Nike or google where you can be a ‘sourcer’ as opposed to a full life cycle recruiter.
