GenZs are cringing at how much paper we waste. Is your agency still printing decks for everyone in the room (pre-pan obviously)? I haven't done that since 2016.

I mean, paper is a renewable resource, and paper itself is recyclable. That doesn’t make the situation perfect (there is still waste in the creation / recycling of it), but I think there are more important resources to worry about than paper. Especially if some people think / learn better when holding paper than a digital screen.

Creatives print the work for two main reasons: 1. It helps sell the work to the client because its tangibility makes it seem more “real” 2. We write down feedback directly on the work, some of which involve sketches for art direction. (Try doing *that* digitally.) Paper literally grows on trees and is 100% recyclable and biodegradable.

Founder 1 did that agency print out 70 pages’ worth of media spreadsheets and aimless strategy diagrams?

My favorite is when people print out PDFs of full decks to hang around their office walls for optics. Our office “recycles,” but people aimlessly toss food into the recycling bins, or we’ll watch the building workers combine wet trash and recycling. People will defend their habits to death, OP. You’ll notice the people defending mass paper waste are director level + here. The same older people in the office who can’t seem to grasp that food covered containers need to be rinsed before making it to recycling receptacles.

ACD1… what? Who is you guys? I don’t make briefs. I have no idea why you assume I need to print out anything at all (spoiler: I don’t). Or why, after reading what I wrote, you think I’m too lazy to be eco-conscious and print the specific pages needed, if ever. The people in my office print waste full-bleed prints of title slides, subtitle slides, one word transition slides— and are the people OP is addressing. I think you missed every point I made? Address your ‘too lazy’ to the people defending printing large decks just to have them at hand so they can make highlights.

Lumber in incredibly sustainable. I'd be more worried about voting for local politicians backing better government - not sure that's as sexy on the Tok tho...

likefunny

It's a supply chain issue, not a lumber shortage. Plenty of trees. As for not knowing lumber's sustainable, I'm in North America, so YMMV, but yes, around here proper practices make logging pretty much as sustainable as it gets.

Gee thanks so much for the media insights, Group M. You really are redefining the role of media! 👌

I’m an older millennial (almost 40) and have always cringed at people who print so much shit out.

I’m not at a social agency keep digging though

As someone who just started in the industry during the pandemic: people used to print out decks for everyone?!? I think what’s worst is when we don’t print front and back. Just that one action alone halves the paper consumption.

Same. My CDs(who were toxic) at the time would berate me if I didn’t print out the decks for creative reviews as it was easier to make notes on. It was a little something to make them feel extra important. This was in 2015.

Seriously. As a millennial, I barely ever even printed when I worked in the office but the older people sometimes printed even emails. Like Why?

like

Why would a media supe ever need to print out spreadsheets? The only stuff worth printing is the *creative*.

I love having a printed deck. It’s a must for taking notes and it’s helpful for those in the room who may not be close enough to the screen to see well. It also allows you to go between pages at will.

like

If we could stop having to print several copies of zillion page RFPs, that would be great.

like

When I started at Leo in 2005, they didn’t even recycle. In comparison, things are better now. But I don’t think it’s a sweeping overstatement to say overconsumption across all things is absurdly and dangerously high.

Same at ours. Lame.

No. Only for comparison design reviews internally. Otherwise we almost never print for client meetings.

Are these the same Gen Zs asking to borrow your printer?
