Do what makes you happy, don't worry about losing a year.

I think you answered your question 😊. Also movin between service areas is harder as you go higher as you are expected to know more.

I'm recommending the promotion path. Honestly, I'm in tech and I've been on dozens of s&o projects. More and more projects require people from both practices and they are all heading in the same area. No point in switching...

Which service line in S&O?

like

Is this a common pursuit for DD? I always thought the digital practices were designers and tech people.

like

Non-target* and this was my only path into consulting

like

OP, try to kick ass on the project then aim to switch. Your sole focus now should be on creating a great first impression. The promotion is just a question of time. Opportunities are rare. 🙂

like

Get in! A year is nothing in a young career.

Hi OP , I was in M&A service line at D .. more than half the work is post merger integration. You'll rarely do Due dilligence , target screening or m&a strategy as Monitor will cover this / investment banks already are in this business. I enjoyed m&a since I was on restructuring team ( which is more interesting IMO). M&a group won't help much with placing you into a Mid market PE fund though ... you'll have to pursue first or second year analyst roles at ibanks and then jump to PE. Virtually impossible from m&a consulting ( at deloitte ) , little less difficult if you are doing m&a strategy w Monitor , Bain, BCG etc

like

@DD OP, I disagree w your friend about targeting SC then trying to move. By SC, you're furthering your position in digital work , making it harder and more expensive for m&a service head put you in their p&l. Go ahead and take the m&a opportunity , abandon digital, and bust your butt in beginning to contribute to eminence building for partners and make your name recognized. In parallel , frame your resume as a m&a practitioner ( assuming you take the opp) , learn m&a/corp dev skills from online (mergers and inquisitions, etc), and reach out aggressively to corp dev m&a in house roles or I banking.

like

A S&O project and if I take this move, pretty sure I'll lose the support to make it to SC in DD.

M&A

I understand the odds are stacked against me, but I'd love to join a MM PE fund one day. I've been taking finance classes, brushing up on some modeling skills, and have every intention of targeting PE within two years. The promotion to SC in DD won't help me get there

They are, except I fell into the role because I went to an in-target but I never stopped learning and taking courses, and more important reading. I'm unlike other DD resources

A2, thanks for sharing. So what's the next best move for me then? I have to try. S&O at least brings me closer than doing mockups and design work in DD

SC2, I have zero interest in tech though. Trying to exit to a Corp Strategy role (or small PE fund if I can pull it off).

A2, solid advice! I'm on board

14 months into my first agency job and I’ve been told from my CDs that I’ve been recommended for a raise. What should I ask for? I’m making 58k now and have had a bunch of work produced.

Align to non-M&A offering but do a lot of work in the space (DD, integrations). B4 recruiter reached out and wants me to provide resume for review with hiring partner in M&A space. Does it work if I provide a bio with summary of M&A projects (client names removed) instead of a traditional resume? Also plan to list education and past experience but primary focus on recent M&A work

Using coulmn #2, total monthly cashflow of all homes is $1,186mo. Initial goal is $20.5K/$1,708 mo. Almost there! If we can rent it for $1.1Kmo (column 3)...AWESOME!
