Rent the tux. Styles change, sizes change, and do you really want to be photographed in the same exact outfit at every formal even for the next X years? Makes more sense to put that money toward a luxury item that you'll use more frequently.
Would you wear it elsewhere? I think suitsupply has a pretty good semi-customizable tux bundle that will fit well and won't break the bank that much.
I probably would wear it elsewhere. I have a tux from suit supply and it has been great but thinking of getting a slight upgrade from what they offer.
Does your bride care? How many people and who will be attending? Do you have a professional photographer? If it's a small party, no photographer, etc. Nobody cares. But if it's larger wedding and you have photographers, custom fit makes a world of difference. Get into your goal shape soon as well cause fitting can't happen until you get into your goal shape.
A bit random, but Saks Off fifth seems to have some tuxedos at good prices right now. You might check there and then get it tailored.
$6K for a tux? You sound like the type who should spend $12k on a tux, so go and do that for us all.
Hugo Boss or Brooks Brothers offers you a tux with options.

You don’t need a brand name tux from Neiman. I got mine custom made at Enzo Custom in NY for maybe $1500?
It totally depends on whether you have occasion to wear a tux regularly and if your size is stable. Got married almost 10 years ago and my now husband had this same debate. Exactly once since then has he had to wear a tux.
I bought a premium hugo boss tux and got it adjusted AF 5 years ago. Probably wore it 3 times since

You want to look your best. If you're a regular shape, you buy a tux off the peg and get it altered. The store staff can make sure you have the right outfit. You don't need to spend $6k. Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Richard James can help you for less than half of that. (Also you want to save some money for a good dress shirt and shoes.)
$6K is too much; I’d go custom elsewhere like Ezra Paul or Geoffrey Lewis in DC. If they can’t create a fully custom tux in time, they’ll be able to do a made to measure in less time and it’ll be better than most off the rack stuff. For off the rack, if you go that route, be sure you’re looking at tuxes with fully-canvased construction, versus half canvased or fused (glued). Fully-canvased would be Canali, Zegna, Isaia, and higher end RL, to name a few.
I bought a really nice suit for my wedding so I would have it for occasions.
There's some on nordstrom rack, just get it tailored.

I always say go custom on your tux especially for a wedding! Crown Tailors might be a good lower cost alternative to consider. It’ll take them about 30 days to get it to you. You’ll have to work with them digitally as they’re based out of Bangkok so be sure to get them as accurate measurements as you can.
Dash of Old towne is another good dmv based tailor assuming you’re in dc ( saw someone mention dc earlier )
+1 for Brooks Bros styles of suits may change but traditional tuxes do not
