It’s not just the lifestyle that sucks, the work and the people are terrible as well. I did just under two years of IB and I don’t miss it.

MBB lifestyle > IB lifestyle. My IB friends are getting killed.

IB really is awful lifestyle compared to even the worst consulting. You really don’t sleep. I would not recommend IB unless you really really want to go into some finance related discipline and need the background it provides. I debated that a lot while I was doing MBA, as I did want to want to go IB for the background and learning. But just couldn’t become ok w the people and lifestyle. The questions they asked me in interviews made my toes curl. But more than that, the pressure and the not sleeping are worse. Anyone can bs a PowerPoint deck w limited time, but it’s a lot harder to be working on financial models at 3am which have to be right and done by 7am. I see the value of doing IB for sure but do it because you really WANT that experience, not for the money. Every dime you make more will go into spending for dry cleaning, late night transport, meals on demand, doctors, etc to facilitate the lifestyle.

My career has been a mix of IB/HF/McK. McK, by a (very) large margin, has been the most pleasant. Don’t discount how soul sucking IB work is at the junior level. Few corporate tasks are worse than doing comps at 2am. The people make it 10x worse. The buy side is nice. I enjoyed it thoroughly and may return to it one day. People were marginally better than IB. But I wouldn’t be willing to go do IB post-MBA with a sliver of a chance of getting into PE. Just not worth it. I’d much rather try my luck with the MBB route. If you’re adamant on going the IB route, then Corp Strat is a feasible exit if PE doesn’t work out. Good luck.

It’ll be tough. Even with previous buy side experience I had trouble converting post MBA buy side offers. As you rightly said, coming in with no finance experience pre MBA is a significant challenge. But I have seen it done. Aim for LMM shops post IB. Network on day 1.

I considered GS IBD during my MBA but ended choosing MBB. I don’t regret that decision - I have a family, and a busy but exciting and balanced professional life. Of course I make only a fraction of what my friends in banking now make (at least those who survived that long). But eh, it just means my kids will have to work as well :-) The way I see it IB is a great and interesting job in the long run; it is soul crushing and borderline stupid in the short-term. No value in doing it for 2-3 years post MBA; only worth it if you buckle up for next 10 years and accept the consequences.

I’m surprised to hear a partner at MBB’s comp is a “fraction” of an IB MD. I knew banking paid more, but I thought it began to somewhat even out at the very senior levels. If you are comparing the best MDs at GS TMT or MS M&A to an average MBB partner, then maybe?

like

Agree with Partner 1 and others above. IB is great as long as you really want to do it - otherwise it will spit you out with little to show at the end. I’ve worked in IB, industry and now McK. The overall “package” - ie the mix of $, quality of people (including not being assholes as well as smarts and richness of experience and perspective), quality of work, opportunity for personal development and renewal, and wlb is highest here.

Have done both - consulting prior to B-school. Banking post B-school. And back to Consulting. Can attest - Banking pays more - but you’re stuck in an industry where people are less collegial and hours are horrible. Consulting is far better. On money, yes, they pay more - however, if you live in a low COL while doing Consulting, you save a lot more than banking in NYC/SF. Ofcourse, there are regional shops in banking but I wouldn’t go there. 2 cents.

Would love to hear thoughts from people, especially those who may have been considering MBB/IB during mba and chose MBB. If PE doesn’t work out, how tough would it be to break into corp strat or something similar assuming I’m at a top firm (GS, MS, Evercore).

like

Corp dev usually takes bankers, Corp strat usually takes consultants. There’s some wiggle room in both directions.

For those saying you had families so you chose MBB, at the associate level even though you’re getting crushed at least you’re sharing a bed with your significant other. Isn’t being away from your family + kids 4 days a week way worse?

Oh god lol

Interviewing with a small internal strat team (currently 3 FTEs) led by the CSO. One VP was awesome, Ex MBB really energetic/excited is with 1.5 yrs in tenure. Then interviewed with the other VP and Manager. They weren’t great, overall not quite at the same level as the VP in terms of professionalism and pedigree. They were very tactical and felt more like middle managers without vision. The latter two seem to have grown up in the company (3-4 years)

Deciding between Insead and oxford mba . Constantly hearing that INSEAD is a tier 1 school where Oxford is second tier . After speaking with alumni , seems like Insead alum are the most passionate too . Living in Singapore and France is a huge plus . Oxford has prestige and is more than just a business school. Their social / ethical take on mba seems to resonate with me a lot more . The alumni seem to choose career paths similar to fields of what I want to do .
